simplywayne90
In Fallout 2, the first cyberdogs were introduced, K-9 and Cyberdog. K-9 was an enclave experiment with a robotic body and electronically enchanced canine brain (with a bit of attitude and sarcasm) While Cyberdog was the NCR's attempt at a similar technology, but he was a far inferior model compared to K-9, weaker, less cybernetic, and only an average dogs intelligence. So, likely Rex is an NCR cyberdog. And is a complete disappointment to Fallout 2 players expecting a metallic canine companion. So I've located several concept artworks for a new improved verison of Rex, along with ideas for improving Rex's storyline and content. I found that out of all the companions Rex had the least improvements or mention in any mods, even ED-E has more despite having no personality or real story to begin with (besides the spoiler story). http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20050429230939/fallout/images/b/bd/Macybraa_se.gifhttp://www.volny.cz/lord_vader/vault/f2/npcs/k9.jpg"K-9 of Enclave Base Navarro, was more extensively modified, with enhancements to the brain and vocal organs allowing intelligence and speech." K-9 was great which is why Rex is such an utter failure in his current state. Heres a funny bit of dialog when you first find him and if you play a stupid character and keep asking him to repeat himself... K-9 - "I... I refuse to go through this with you a second time! Were I capable of full movement presently I would bite you in the fleshy part of youranterior region commonly referred to as the....." Low Intelligence Player - "Ass. Me know what ass is. Me not dummy. Me just joke with you." K-9 - "Oh, a joke. Hardy har har har. Now, are you my new master or not?" Low Intelligence Player - Yes. Me want doggie. He had lots of funny lines (in Fallout 2 you had to ask your followers to put their weapons away before they'd do it.) so if you asked K-9 to put his weapon away. Player - K-9, put your weapons away for now if you can. K-9 - Uhm....Do you expect me to swallow my teeth master? .....If you ask him what weapons he could use he'd say Teeth, master. The shiny white things installed in my mouth. They're for biting out throats. http://www.newvegasnexus.com/imageshare/images/1329910-1299743413.jpg Edited March 12, 2011 by simplywayne90
simplywayne90
I enjoyed Rex, but felt he could've been much better. In Fallout 3 many mods were made wear you could build robots with different faction paints on them. (NCR, RobCo, Rangers, etc.) I felt that since many other players are completely unsatisfied with Rex that he could be reskinned several different ways and then put quests in to achieve each new look and perhaps new abilites. Some examples may be, A True Fallout Cyberdog, with a full mechanical body and increased intelligence like K-9Alien Tech Cyberdog, glowing tech like the ghost armor modMongrel Cyberdog, A legion mongrol body with vanilla cyber attachments, this might make more sense due to the legions lack of advanced tech unlike the Enclave or NCR.NCR Cyberdog, Simply a recoloring and whatever else the modder felt was "NCR"Great Khans Cyberdog, Perhaps add skulls and new colors, maybe gorier organic parts.Steampunk Cyberdog, Clockwork instead of tech, replace brain in braincase to gears and cogs. (you could make them move by turning the texture, like the fan on the remnant armors back I believe.)As a joke I've included "Rex 117" a Halo version cyberdog. There are many different ways you could make Rex look, post more if you would like to. . Each one could have its own quest and special perks or traits to match its appearance, such as the alien one may find power cells or be resistant to energy weapons. Here are the photos of examples of various looks, including what Rex should have looked like to begin with. http://www.newvegasnexus.com/imageshare/images/1329910-1299743413.jpghttp://ru.wikifur.com/w/images/thumb/2/2e/IronDefender.jpg/300px-IronDefender.jpghttp://fc00.deviantart.net/fs12/f/2006/333/8/0/Cyberdog_by_Stina_N.jpghttp://fc08.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2010/142/7/e/Sacred_Seasons_2_Watch_Dog_by_frogbillgo.jpghttp://www.newvegasnexus.com/imageshare/images/1329910-1301005404.jpg Edited March 24, 2011 by simplywayne90
X5Alexander
soo... make him look like a tron dog?
simplywayne90
Not a tron dog, but more tech looking, with lights and parts is all. And my idea was that there could be several looks to give him, each with different perks and skill, like the legion rex could have higher damage and gives you an evil perk. etc. The ghost armor just uses good glow maps so I used it as an example. X5Alexander
Yeah, i like the idea a lot. I am just not capable of doing anything like it myself.
simplywayne90
Since Dead money, perhaps we could add a hologram texture on a few parts to make him even more interesting looking.

devinpatterson
Here are some photos for more "new look" ideas for Rex, the halo one is just a joke but still pretty cool. I know what you mean, fixing him up to be high tech would be cool. Advanced nano tech armor, cybernetic implants etc all the things we associate with future technology in a 100 years would be great equipment for Rex. But as he is now, he fits in with that 50's/fallout conception of what future technology would be (nuclear tech everywhere, personal laser firearms, etc). I'm not a huge fan of the retro sci-fi view (I'd rather have realistic extrapolations of technology) but since that's the setting we are in, it would "fit" better in the fallout universe if you could cultivate that theme. And I think ultimately make a better mod overall. At least until a better post apocalyptic gameworld comes out with realistic super tech, that is as popular as fallout and lets us mod it to an inch of it's life (I have high hopes for RAGE) P.S. nothing against fallout, love the game (in fact I probably play it too much). I enjoy the social implications of the 50's type social values, settings etc. Just think the tech sucks :( Edited March 11, 2011 by devinpatterson
simplywayne90
Well I can understand you think that, but in Fallout 2 we had both the regular cyberbog and k-9 (Doctor who parody companion) who were both more like the dogs I put in the photos which is why I feel Rex is an abomination, he either should've been made like in Fallout 2 or they should have cut him from the game and included dogmeat or Ulysess instead. It makes little sense that the enclave appartently worked a lot with cyberdogs according to dialog in New Vegas, so why does Rex look like his has cancer, mange, and is weak as a squirell without teeth Edited March 24, 2011 by simplywayne90
simplywayne90
Oh yeah on another note I don't want to bring back K-9 since he is dead according to the Fallout Bible. (Issue 6) K-9 (from Navarro) "After getting his motivator repaired, K-9 was left in NCR by the Chosen One so that he could receive necessary repairs from Dorothy and, not long after his recovery, Dr. Henry (who had been placed in critical condition after being reportedly assaulted by the Chosen One some time earlier). Dr. Henry, afraid that too much information about the Enclave would be obtained from K-9, attempted to destroy the cyborg, but was stopped by cyberdog and Dorothy, who suspected what Dr. Henry was planning. The NCR government used the attack as an excuse to confiscate K-9 and cyberdog in order to learn more information about the Enclave as well as what makes the two of them "tick." At last report (and over Dorothy's objections), K-9 and cyberdog were disassembled and analyzed. Structural damage during the disassembling is reported to have killed them both."
