I think it's safe to say that most of us are... disappointed, in the choice of music available in the default game. There's scores of posts discussing how that could be fixed, and at least a dozen radio station mods that try and remedy the problem. I figure I'll have a crack at it, too! This is less a mod request than a mod community wishlist; I've been in the process of making it since last week, and I'd like to get some outside opinions on what to include and what direction to take the mod. Currently, there are five unique stations, each playing their own mix of tunes. I'd like at least 20 songs per station. The tracklists themselves are first on the plate; AFTER they're done, I'm thinking of further expanding the mod to include actual NPC DJs, explorable radio station locations, and a small collection of station-specific quests to make the new stations a bit more interesting.

So, what do you guys think of these stations? What would YOU put on a New Vegas radio station, if it was up to you? I'd like at least five more tracks per station, a Youtube sample would be nice!

(note- I've actually got access to most of these tracks on CD or mp3; my parents were greaser throwbacks and amateur rockabilly DJs, so what I don't have here I'm sure I can get over the holidays.)

(note note- Each of these radio stations is eventually going to include an unmarked quest. Every few days, a vignette will announce that the station is giving away free stuff; if you can get to the radio station within a set period of time, the DJ will give you a small but interesting prize. You have to be listening to the station to here the announcement, of course! There will also be a small quest available for each radio station. The goals and prizes would be fairly simple, and all would involve dicking over whichever station they view as a natural rival)

-edit note- Another thing. Old bands are great and all, but I'd really like to see some lesser known modern bands get a bit of recognition, too. Sasquatch, for example, should by rights be the biggest rock and roll sensation in history, but he was born in the wrong time. And drinks too much. And pukes on stage. There's still a very active "retro" scene all over the world, and unlike, say, Buddy Holly (who is dead) or Elvis (who is living on Mars), young people can actually go see these guys and support them by buying their music. Some period musical purists might not be pleased, but unless enough people complain, that's why they're going in.

RAIDER RADIO

It's a Raider-controlled radio station, focused on psychobilly music. I think it'd be perfect for raiders, since it mixes the 1950s feel of the Fallout world with the punk edge of the various Raider gangs.

DJ- Betti Van Doren. "Friendly" female raider. Radio station in Freeside sewers, covered in spent chems and Sasquatch posters.

Associated factions: Raiders, Great Khans

Promotional special: gives player Well Rested...

Quest: "Grave Robbing Bastard" Betti wants a resurrection man to help her "retrieve" some items from the graveyard near Renegade Wastleand Radio.

Reverend Horton Heat- Wiggle Stick

Hank Williams III- I'm The Only Hell My Mama Ever Raised *

Los Straightjackets- Munsters Theme

Sasquatch and the Sick-a-Billys- Understand Your Man

The Cramps- I Was a Teenage Werewolf

* Hank III is kind of an odd one out, but I couldn't justify not including him. Horton heat provides a kind of audio segue to the rawer country sounds of Hank, but maybe I should include a few more "evil hillbilly" tracks just to mix it up? Maybe something by Unknown Hinson?

MOLERAT JACK RADIO

Classic pop-rock radio station with 50s-60s feel. Squares welcome!

DJ: Molerat Jack. Has radio station in Tops Casino, take elevator to access.

Associated factions: Freeside, The Strip

Promotional special: gives player children's mole helmet

Quest: "Noise Pollution" Molerat wants you to stage a protest against Hep Cat Radio.

Bobby Darin- Dream Lover

Del Shannon- Little Runaway

Dion and the Belmonts- Runaround Sue

Patti Page- How Much Is That Doggie in the Window *

Patti Page- Tennesse Waltz *

**

Shangrilas - Leader of the Pack

*Patti Page might do better on Radio New Reno, but I like how she breaks up the playlist with some sugar and class. What do you think?

** I really, REALLY want to make a dungeon, filled with robots, and an intercom system blasting "Robot Riot" and "Telstar" the whole time.

HEP CAT RADIO *

Rockin tunes to race hot rods to. Squares go home!

DJ: Cry-Baby Walker, leader of the Vault 21 chapter of the Tunnel Snakes. Has radio station in Tops Casino, across hall from Molerat.

Associated factions: Freeside, The Kings

Promotional special: gives player Tunnel Snakes jacket.

Quest: "Ratfink" Cry-Baby needs parts to fix his PreWar Roadster, the rarest of which have fallen into the hands of his bitter rival, Molerat.

Buddy Holly- Peggy Sue

Johnny Depp- King Cry-baby

Carl Perkins- Blue Suede Shoes

* this whole station could easily get out of hand.

RENEGADE WASTELAND RADIO

Mostly gospel and classic country/ blues, often with a religious and/or apocalyptic tinge.

DJ: Miss Daisy. Sweet Wasteland country belle, radio station based out of ruined church/ farm.

Associated factions: Followers of the Apocalypse

Promotional special: gives player LE BB gun and tons of BB ammo

Quest: "Satan is Real" Miss Daisy wants you to bring pamphlets and a Bible to chem addicts near Raider Radio.

Louvin Brothers- Atomic Power *

Louvin Brothers- I Like the Christian Life

Johnny Cash- Boy Named Sue

Johnny Cash- The Man Comes Around **

Hank Williams- So Lonesome I Could Cry

Etta Baker- Knoxville Rag

* I don't know HOW the Fallout team missed this one.

** Technically not period, but it's a great song, and it fits too perfectly to pass on.

RADIO NEW RENO

Mostly big band, jazz, and r&b from the early and mid 20th century. Closest thing to existing Fallout radio stations.

DJ: Mr New Reno, midget ghoul. Hates Mr New Vegas. Radio station found near northern edge of map, is local affiliate of New Reno radio station.

Associated factions: NCR

Promotional special: gives player set of cards

Quest: "FCC" Mr New Reno wants you to end Mr New Vegas' show... permanently. Bombs will be involved, and BE WARNED that completing this quest will cause a large drop in relations with New Vegas natives as well as permanently disabling the default New Vegas radio station.

Louis Armstrong- Wonderful World

Cab Calloway- Minnie the Moocher

Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross- Cloudburst

Billie Holiday- Strange Fruit

Frank Sinatra- All I Need is the Girl

THE LAND PIRATES

Royalty free radio! These are smaller modern bands. If it turns out there's a copyright issue with uploading the above songs as part of a nonprofit community mod, this could be a fallback. These bands are small enough to contact and ask for permission to upload their songs, no guarantees of course.

Sasquatch and the Sick-a-Billys

Kim Lenz

Raging Teens

The Racketeers

Pep Torres

What is the estimated release date for this??? Sounds epic and fun!

None yet. I've got the DJ NPC models, one radio station building with two studios, and about half the current playlist done. I'm also working on updating a stealth armor quest mod I just released this morning, so... two weeks? Two months?

I'll try and get the actual radio stations themselves done first, that way I can release them early and take my time working on the interactivity- quests, items, band fliers and playbills, crap like that. The bare bones version "should" be done well before the holidays, pending unforeseen Diablo III/ Chinese Democracy problems.

  • 2 weeks later...
Not to necro my own post, but in case anyone cares, the mod is well under way. Raider Radio is uploaded and fully listenable and I am currently in the process of uploading the rest of the stations. Due to network problems, this might take a few days, but the first phase of the mod is essentially done. Still no DJ banter or finished studios; that should be the next thing I work on after debugging the stations themselves. Edited by DorostheConqueror

I found some resources for you to use from when we discussed this way back. (from Falllout 3 so you'd need to find a way to make them work in New Vegas)

Holy Bible -- Modders Resource

National Cathedral -- Modders Resource

There are at least 100 to 150 more resources from Fallout 3 on this thread

Modders Resource Thread

And I put a lot of resources on the Vegas Love Chapel Thread

Vegas Love Chapel Thread

Hope some of that helps even a little bit.

(By the way Kudos for adding Louis Armstrong!!!)

Raider Radio Brilliant! The spirit, not the letter of the Lore.

I'll just skim an idea your way in case it's of use. The radio station in game saying what a great, enterprising or helpful person the player is . . . Supposing you flipped that? Supposing the DJ reported your doings to the wasteland so that your enemies could intercept you? What if the DJ has reasons for wishing you ill. . . .

Normally when I make suggestions (I think) I have an idea of what is involved in pulling it off. In this case I freely admit I don't have a clue whether you could tie your 'mod' station into the players progress, possibly not since it seems the devs struggle with it, but have a look at the 1979 movie 'The Warriors' an tell me the DJ's part isn't inspired.
