Just to add some needed insight to this thread, all the Telvanni wizards claim that Moon-and-Star was (and is) indisputable proof of identity for Nerevar. However, the curse that supports this claim, namely, the enchantment placed upon it by Azura to instantly kill the wearer if he is not Nerevar, is dependent on one thing: That this curse is not altered or removed.

 

I believe that the Emporer made a deal with Azura... If the prisoner comes to fulfill the prophecy by his own means, then Azura will modify her curse accordingly to meet her end of the deal. As Maesa said, "You are not the Nerevarine. You may become the Nerevarine."

 

Also, I suggest that Morrowind Lore would be a somewhat better place for this topic.

Ehh, It doesnt matter. I saved the world thats all that matters. As long as I got them Telvanni at my back, I say screw y'all.

Nimbani Maesa said that because you had some of the qualities that Nerevar posessed, and fit the Prophecies' description, but you had not fufilled the quests of Curse of Ash, Ghosts, etc. You are the Nerevarine, after you are elected by the Ashlanders and Houses. Azura even calls you Nerevarine in your vision after you pick up the ring.
