RelicDuDe
I have played DAO, DA2, and now DAI... i have imported characters to the keep... as well as using standard characters... I made a so called "good" world-state.. played the game and them changed all the choices into bad... ie killed everyone possible.. didn't help anyone.... etc... and played again... I found that nothing much changed in my play trough... if i killed Leliana at the urn of sacred ashes... she is in DAI anyway... saved by the maker ... yeah.. right.. then 1 minute later she complained that that same maker didn't save the Divine and is good for nothing.... lol... If i never even talked to Dagna in DAO.. she appears as my Arcanist anyway in DAI.. Alistair can be replaced by Stroud.. as warden.. but quests are the same... Anora can replace Alistair in Redcliff.. but.. yeah.. you guessed it... etc etc.... My conclusion: The keep is useless.... Can anyone enlighten me.. or am i right ?..... Thandal
You're missing the point of the Keep as it's currently employed. It's not to make major changes to the game's story-arc, although it could be used that way, (and might someday...) it's simply to acknowledge the player's previous investment in the series. You point-out the one "No way to avoid retconning it" issue; Leli's presence if you killed her in DAO. But honestly, creating an entirely new character with as much back-story and, (for the overwhelming majority of players) emotional impact would have required waaaaay too much exposition and interaction. Not to mention wasting all the effort (by devs and players) that had already been invested in her.

I sure hope they use it one day in a better or more elaborate function, and you suggested. But having said that, Bioware says "change the world-state and experience a whole new DAI" or something to that respect, and that's not so. Because no matter in what way you chance the world-state, nothing really changes in the story. Don't get me wrong, i love DAI.. i enjoy playing it, and i think its a great game, But having killed Leliana, i obviously hadn't invested anything in her, in that play-trough... or i wouldn't have killed her. and bringing her back anyway, is an easy way out, far as i am concerned. Replacing Leliana with Tallis, If you killed Leliana in DAO, to name one character.. would have been a really good idea imho... and in no way to difficult... Tallis was already in DA and easy to implement... Personally i loved Tallis, and really miss her in DAI. Also, me thinks that Tallis is liked by a lot of players. As is Leliana, who was my most romanced character in Origins... And this way you would have had a choice. and choice is good in any RPG.... I think Bioware is taking that particular easy way out, way to many times.. in Dragon age as well as in Mass Effect.... But that's just my idea.... Anyway, thanks for your views on the matter. Thandal
Corinne Kempa <--> Felicia Day. Pick your fav! Love both and would listen to either one reading the phonebook, if that were on offer. Personally, for this role of the Inquisition Spymaster, I prefer Corinne's more straight-ahead acting approach to Felicia's verbal winks to the audience player. But hope to see/hear Tallis in some DLC. As for the Keep providing a way to "change the world-state and experience a whole new DAI", I think you're projecting what you want it to do onto what BioWare said it would do. From the official announcement: The Dragon Age Keep In Dragon Age, choices matter. It has always been important for us that our fans have complete control and freedom in shaping their Dragon Age world. The decisions you make, the foes you vanquish, the relationships you forge. It’s all important and needs to be honored. Many of you have been wondering how your choices from Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age II will be supported in Dragon Age Inquisition. Today, I’m here to give you information on exactly that. I’m excited to announce the Dragon Age Keep. Within the Keep, you’ll be able to customize a Dragon Age historical world state to your exact specifications. How did you modify your Warden and Hawke? Who were your companions? Who did you choose to romance? Who rose to power, and who fell in defeat? What legacy did you leave? Within the Keep, you’ll be able to customize as much or as little about the world of Thedas as you wish. Then you’ll be able to import your saved world state into DAI at the start of a new game. Have you lost or corrupted your save files? No problem — remake your world state on the Keep, and preserve it for the future. For those folks new to the Dragon Age franchise, the Keep will serve as a great way to understand the people, places, and events that shaped the world leading up to DAI. I think it does a fair job of what it was designed to do.
RelicDuDe
Felicia Day of cource.... well.. I love Corinne Kempa's voice as well tbh... But after having seen Felicia play with herself... on you tube... I fell for her... and i would have been really happy to have seen her back in DAI... replacing Leliana with Tallis IF you killed Leliana in DAO would have made a lot if sense imho... Leliana was this lovely almost innocent character in DAO.. at least my version was.. (heavily modded game..) Missed her a lot in DA2... Bethany made up for it... thought it was a blunder to have Bethany killed when you wanted to play a mage... I love playing a mage.. and i really cared for Bethany.. hated my imbecile brother... so that was an impossible choice for me. was it really so difficult to have you be able to make that choice yourself ?... finally reverted to the (Sophie's choice mod) Tallis made up for it.. But Bioware missed out there when they didn't allow you to have Tallis as a permanent companion after the DLC. Those are characters that where worth remembering in my world. So... Maybe i am in the first stages of Alzheimer... which on my age isnt really so unlikely, Or maybe its like you said... that i project my wishes on what bioware said.. But I hadn't read that.. hardly ever read anything these days. but back on topic... Choices matter ?.... Matter for what ?... That you will see Anora or Alistair in one of the 2 ways to gain aid.. that you will see Stroud or Alistair as a Grey warden but same quest ?... Personally, i don't really care who walks in, if it chances nothing. And isn't that the same as what they said about Mass effect ?... and the choices didn't matter there as well.. in the end. You know what i think about, when any game developer says "Choices matter?...." That If you kill someone that he or she stays dead... and that that could have real consequences... That if you exiled Tali, that it would be rather hard if not impossible.. to recruit the Quarian people... Same for Wrex. And that if you killed both chances.. that you could lose the war... THATS when choices really matter.. I mean... The Divine is a rather important character in DAI... why would the Maker save Leliana, but not the Divine ?... and Leliana doesn't have an arch-demon.. far as i know.. it just doesn't make sense... "If the maker doesn't intervene to save the best of his servants.. what good is he ?..." Is what Leliana says.. So does she count herself above the Divine in importance ?... Looks that way. Or is this proof that the Maker doesn't exist in Dragon age ?. But if he doesn't... then who saved Leliana ?... Me stays confused...
Thandal
When I hear a developer say "Choices matter" when talking about carrying forward from one game to the next, (not within a particular game) I always take that to mean that my previous choices will be acknowledged, and not blatantly ignored or overturned. But that's it. We've already discussed the one obvious retcon (for a certain, very small, minority of DAO players) but for me and my Thedas, BioWare met my expectations for incorporating the World-State from DAO/DA2. Would I liked to have seen more than a few cameos and reference lines? Sure. And given another year and US$1M of development it might have been possible. RelicDuDe
Perhaps they should have taken that year then... and made truly epic game where my Grey Warden Lana would have a tough time winning at all.. as she killed everyone she could, and helped no one... nope.. no saving Redcliff... Passed though there yesterday... it should have been a pile of rubble after Grey Warden Lana passed through... but surprise... it wasn't. So.... Then.. we simply seem to have different standards... I can live with that. And i can live with DAI being a great game.. that i love to play.. but where playing the previous games do not matter or amount to much change, if any. I am still cross with Bioware about not putting Tallis in my party though.... and i am NOT going to forgive them for that.....
