MODs and actually using them

Hi I'm new to this adding mods and wanted to try them out. I downloaded the mods I wanted to try and put them in my fallout new vegas folder and accessed the data files and none of the mods are there. I downloaded falloutNV from steam. What am I doing wrong?

All of the mods on this site are zipped, to conserve bandwidth and drive space, so you need to extract them first, and then put them in your data folder. Hope this helps...
