Unusual Companion Scripting

Long Distance (Temporary) Companions

 

I have created an unusual weapon that fires (hopefully) temporary companions. The gun currently fires projectiles that hatch into custom NPCs after a few seconds and will kill all hostiles shortly after they enter the field. I'm trying to figure out a way to have them set as companions as soon as they enter the game so that the player will gain experience from the kills and so they could be fired from long distances. Any ideas how this might be accomplished?
