Lore Accurate Sten

So, we have the awesome tmp7704's Kossith Race mod which does a very good job for Qunaris in DA:O. Yet, the sten provided by this mod, while looking cool.. doesn't really match the appearance he is supposed to have, as we can see in these renditions here , from the spinoff thingy game Heroes of dragon age, and here , from the comic Those who speak. Now the problem is, his original face in Origins also doesn't really match this appearance, which is kinda like a mix of both the Qunari update and the original face. Bummer, right?

Now, as someone who really enjoy lore as well as continuity, i'm kind of frustrated by the fact there is no real lore accurate alternative for Sten available right now. And i'm even more frustrated by the fact that i'm completely unable to do anything myself, having no modding experience whatsoever. Now from what i understand, it's impossible to change the face morph of the qunari update because it was this way in DA2; hence, all the qunaris have the same face in DA:O with this mod installed. With DA:I now out, and the qunari being a playable race in it, i was wondering if it would at all be possible to somehow get a qunari facemorph from DA:I imported into DA:O? since it hasn't been done yet, i would assume it's not doable but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Another possibility would be to alter the existing morph of sten (if we can even just alter sten's face texture with the qunari update installed, and not all qunaris') to at least use the correct skin tone, which is kind of yellowish according to the two images i provided. Or maybe just use the texture from the Qunari update mod on a regular Sten morph, but i don't think that's possible either. ._. so yeah.. basicly any mod which could atler Sten to look like what he's supposed to look like, while still keeping the other qunaris' appearance provided by the qunari update, would be awesome. And i would like to know if it would be at least possible, or if i should stop dreaming right away and accept that i'll never get a truly accurate sten in my game.

I do believe, to an extent at least, that the golden glow could indeed be a lighting effect. However, seeing as the second image has Sten having a yellowish skin tone too, it appears less likely. Besides, i'm not sure a lighting effect could turn a purplish skin to a yellow one, at least not that much. But it clearly is more yellowish than it should be, because of the lighting :).

Qunaris clearly have been altered between the first one and the second one at least. But between DA2 and DAI, they didn't change that much. They just added complexity and options to them, because they were playable for the first time, while in DA2 they only were npcs with the same face. Which is why we have a mod for DAO that makes all Qunaris have the same face: they used DA2 model. But seeing they were able to do that with the DA2 model, i believe it might also be possible to do the same with the DAI one, therefore providing variety for Qunaris, and opening the possibility of a more lore accurate Sten through DAI available options for the Qunari character creator :) but then again, it seems DAO modding scene is pretty much dead; so that prolly will never be made, sadly.

I agree, the depiction from the first link is one I like most. I admit the current face of Sten makes me less eager to go with him: he looks constantly pissed off; I don't like the thought it could be me ;). I found a getaround for that: I put a face-obstructing helmet on him and then I can use his two-hander skills. He's a nicer person than I thought.

Are you sure it is not possible to retexture his skin? If you know how to export the texture as a picture, you could alter it, even in PowerPoint, then import back... and have a different skin for Sten.

Or maybe other races see the Qunari as so alike, because they are not used to them? When you stick around a species for a long time, you learn to see the subtle differences. It is just an excuse though ;). I wish I knew how to mod so that I could try to help you.

The thing with putting an helmet on his face wouldn't change much, since in cutscene you don't see the helmets :)

It would totally be possible to retexture his skin. The problem is, i'm not sure that it would change the body texture as well, and i'm not sure it would only affect Sten; i fear it would affect all other qunaris as well. Besides, my skills in photoshop and stuff aren't up to the job.. i actually tried to retexture the face of Sten for the Qunari mod to appear kinda yellowish, and i failed badly. Besides, even if the retexture was effective... the overall appearance of the face still wouldn't be accurate, sadly.

It is a nice way to try and find Bioware an excuse, i'll give you that haha :) but let's be honest: they just were too lazy/too pressured by EA to try and put more work into Qunaris' appearance. Thanks though, i also wish i had the skills to mod it myself. But i'll keep hoping someone will eventually try, i guess :p

I know this was the case ;P... Sad. Well, if you did retexture Sten, I wouldn't worry about the skin affecting all Qunari models in the game, because they are not so numerous. Where can you exactly see them? Apart from Sten's nightmare in the Fade, of course. I'm glad you liked my joke!

And wasn't there a mod to show helmets in cutscenes?

Did you try to contact members of any of DeviantArt groups related to DAO? Maybe someone there could help you.

Well, Sten's nightmare is already too much a thing for me. Yes, i'm picky like that, unfortunately :p

As far as i know... no, there isn't. There is a mod to hide helmets all the time though. But never found one to show them.

And nope, i didn't try to contact them, didn't even know they existed to be honest. But then again, as far as i know, Deviantart isn't really a site for modding, haha. But i guess they could help for the retexture, at least.
