installing tool set help database error

I am trying to install the tool-set, tried at lest 5 times or more, I keep getting this error "An instance with the same name is already installed on this computer. To proceed with SQL Server Setup, provide a unique instance name."

I've searched the net and the forums but can't find any way to fix it. I've uninstalled anything I can find to do with the database, including msxl 6 (not sure if I spelled it right), as well as msxml 5.0 and anything to do with it. I also have a msxml 4.0 which I still have installed not sure if that would have any effect (and not sure what might not work on my pc if I uninstall it). (and I did check and no other instances of it were in memory at the time I was trying to install it)

I am using xp sp3

As long as you don't have any programs that require it (you should know as installation of those programs would have required you to install sql server), go to your Control Panel, open up Add or Remove Programs, then uninstall the following:

  1. Dragon Age Toolset
  2. Microsoft SQL Server 2005
  3. Microsoft SQL Server Native Client
  4. Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files (your language)
  5. Microsoft SQL Server VSS Writer

If asked to remove databases, remove them. Once all that is uninstalled, go ahead and install the toolset and go with the default choices. Good luck

I did all this but when the Server is installing I still get this error "An instance with the same name is already installed on this computer. To proceed with SQL Server Setup, provide a unique instance name."

the error seems to be in the database setup part of the install. atlest thats where the red x is on the sql server setup window.

Ok, repeat the five uninstall steps (step one is probably all you will be able to do but check just the same.) Then, go to [Your Installation Drive]:\Program Files\Dragon Age and delete the "tools" folder. Then check your Program Files folder for a folder named "Microsoft SQL Server" and if it is present, delete it too. Attempt to reinstall again.

well, I tried all that but when I tried to install again I still got the same error....I have attached the log file which was generated from the error. if you have the time please take a look perhaps the answer is in there....This is only part one of the file as I had to split it into 2 as it was to large to u/l.

From what I could tell, there is or was another version of SQL present on your computer and it seems to be the registry entries for that instance that are causing at least part of your problem. You can go into your registry and attempt to remove the entries (after uninstalling everything again) but I am not going to assume the liability of providing directions to do so. On my own machine I won't hesitate to go stomping through the registry but on someone else's machine; nope, not gonna do it.

hmm, well I looked at msconfig and found some listings for sql files so i unchecked them, I uninstalled everything again, rebooted. reinstalled and bang still the same error. I uninstalled, and tried to install the MS database 2005 by d/l the version from Microsoft and installing it before installing the toolkit....I gave the instances a unique name like the MS install suggested. (for the first time I did not get that error when installing the database) (this time when I installed the toolkit, I told it not to install the database prg as I already installed it) But when I tried to run the tool kit it said that it could not load the database....so it still won't work...(this time when I installed the toolkit, I told it not to install the database prg as I already installed it)

you would think getting the newest version and installing it would make it work. I did a search for sql files on my hd, I notice that a lot of the .net uses sql files as well as TVeristy (a prg that lets you stream video from the net and your oc to your xbox), I don't think I should uninstall or mess with the .net as too many prgs use that.

Not sure what to try now, there is a 2008 version of the database, should I try that instead of the 2005 version(tho that is what the toolkit installs)

So I fixed the error I had but still can't get it to work...

I would bet that you already have a newer or different version installed (especially in light of the registry conflict in your log.) So, the only other thing I know of to try would be to install the toolset and skip the SQL server installation.

The toolset wiki says:

If you choose not to install SQL Server Express, the installer will ask for a database server and database name to install the toolset's resource database to instead. The default server is .\BWDATOOLSET and the default database name is bw_dragonage_content.

Try that, if that fails I don't know of anything else you might try.
