Oblivion Crashing on Startup (before main menu)

Hi

I recently purchased Oblivion GOTY edition from steam a few months ago. I recently purchased a new computer and am having problems running Oblivion on it. The Launcher tries to recognize my graphics card but cannot, and i get this:

"Video hardware unrecognized. Video quality settings defaulting to medium quality"

Then once I try to open the game from the launcher, I can see the Bethesda image, the 2K games screen, the second Bethesda image, then it freezes on the copyright screen. It also freezes if I try to skip these by pressing the Esc.

This is pretty frustrating as I just want to play. Any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated

Here are my specs (which are more than qualified to play oblivion)

NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 425M GPU (1GB VRAM)

i7-740QM processor

Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

4GB SDRAM

Thanks

Whoa. Have you tried going into the options menu first and raising the graphics settings to high? Sometimes that helps.

Other than that I can only think of a Windows 7 problem. If you installed it in the default directory (like C:/Program files...), that might be a problem. I am not telling you to reinstall it in another directory, because I am not sure that will help. But it MIGHT be part of the problem. If you search this forum, there should be quite a few topics about Oblivion running under Windows 7.

have you tried running any other games or downloaded any driver updates? If youve updated it, couldve done something wrong there, cause its more than likely Oblivion will recognise it, so trouble shoot with another game first, and check in device manager if your GT425s 'working properly'

No, this is not true. Oblivion will not recognize newer cards because, well they're new. You need to manually set the options to High, or Very High, as chakaru11 mentioned. You do this from the Oblivion Launcher.exe.

Other than that, have you installed any mods? Or are you running a strictly vanilla setup. Vanilla meaning only what was included in the GOTY package. I'm assuming you got the GOTY Deluxe with all the DLCs? Make sure they are selected in the Oblivion launcher - Data Files. If the game still fails to launch you should first try to validate your files through STEAM. If there are any errors STEAM will correct them. If this doesn't work you will need to uninstall Oblivion, delete local game content, and reinstall. Report back with any progress you make during any of the above steps.

Good luck.

im also using the Steam copy with W7 64 and if they installed steam on C drive itll be at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\oblivion and doesnt seem to have any problem with mods or security. Sounds like it was a real hassle with Vista machines

I turned on my computer earlier tonight and tried to play Oblivion once again. Steam started downloading "updates" and now the game works! I have no idea what was happening yesterday. Thanks for your help.

good stuff, and btw if you ever find steams taking too long to load the game, try disconnecting your modem, so steam gets bypassed and the game can start on its own. I sometimes have a super slow connection, and stumbled on that gem in frustration: doesnt affect performance or 'dlc' content, considering its all on your hard drive anyway. Guess that 'finished downloading dlc content' message before it loads means its finished re-checking for official updates/patches which are probably done for this game allready
