UhuruNUru
What wasteland you may ask, well it roughly breaks down to old and new games. Note: Old in this context is when the game was added to Nexus Mods, so Oblivion (released 2006) wasn't an old game when it was first supported here, but Crysis (released 2007) was old. From the moment the Nexus allowed any game to be added to the games list, people have been adding games, with no controls or oversight in place. Now anyone casually browsing the list can only see a barren wasteland of unsupported games. First I'll show the Problem with some simple search data (Frozen at time of copying, so the big ones have likely changed, it's close enough for this posts topic, anyway) Nexus Mods - Games in the Ten Now I'm all for supporting modding of old games and if hosting assets, from sites that are being closed down is required, then I'd fully back that sort of addition. The simple fact is if these old games are still being modded at all, they are being modded by their existing communities on the same sites they started on.They will not migrate to Nexus Mods, except to save their community from oblivion (Damn Daedra messing with mortals again). The best way to support these old and established communities, would be to provide links to their sites.Offering the Nexus as a safe haven, if required and pointing those who want to mod these games to the best place to do it. In general removing the games, already well supported elsewhere, from the lists entirely and creating the "Where to get mods for these older games" section, as I've described. This would leave only the thriving Nexus Mods games and well stocked repositories, of games always supported by a Nexus Community. To begin with the lists will be much smaller with games under 10 mods being the rough cut, but the fine tuning will add a few with more files here than ten, if a real community exists elswhere. As a rough estimate only about 40 of the 164 games have any real community on the Nexus.New games that are moddable should be always added and a Community established and supported. However, if it becomes clear the fight is lost and the users have gone to another site, support that site. The end result will be a Nexus Mods respected on other sites for supporting modding wherever the mod community chooses to exist.A Nexus Mods always ready to provide a refuge for those communities if required.A Nexus Mods where every hosted game has or once had a thriving community, not just the occaisional oasis amongst a wasteland of games with no Nexus Mods community at all. Thandal
Sorry, I'm missing your point, (or maybe you're missing Dark0ne's?) :geek: Dark0ne simply made it possible for a community interested in ANY game to be created here. How vibrant those communities are is, well... up to each community. If some other modding site has more activity around any particular game, great! So the Nexus won't ever be the go-to site for mods for that game. So what? (NOTE: A Nexus game site with no files occurs when someone uploads something and later removes it. Why do that? Who knows?)
bben46
This reminds me of what I call MBA thinking - Because some product we sell is not selling as well as some others, even if it is bringing in a small profit, we MUST remove that product and use what resources we are currently using for it somewhere else. Even though the resources are negligible and there is no way to use them to enhance sales on some other product. Net result - you lose what small profit you were getting from that product with absolutely no gain to any other. And, just maybe that product was bringing customers in the door that would then see something else. (Yup, I have seen exactly this scenario play out in business.) The point - someone googles a game that has just a few mods, or even the one with none. It sends them to the Nexus where they discover more games that they can mod - net result a new member downloading mods they didn't even know existed.
DrakeTheDragon
Hmm, I fear I'm missing the point as well. If this is about linking or cross-referencing to other communities more established somewhere else for certain games, well, feel free to do so. Last time I checked there's no cross-linking other community websites prohibition or anything in place here at all. And there should also be no rules preventing other communities' members from coming here and telling people of their own websites either. Why someone from the Nexus (staff?) should go out and search for those places they don't even know of just to link to them from here somewhat officially, or whatever it is that's asked for here, I somehow fail to understand. But then again, what is it exactly this topic is asking for? What's the point? I somehow can't make much sense out of it, sorry. Oh, but one line in particular needs to be corrected: However, if it becomes clear the fight is lost and the users have gone to another site, support that site. That's one giant misunderstanding right there. There is no fight going on to begin with. This isn't a competition after all and never was it meant to be (Dark0ne correct me, if I'm wrong), but if it were the case, then many past decisions would've unfolded in entirely different directions by far.
