Where/How to Get Started

First off, I am very sorry if this has been done. I'm brand new to the Nexus RPG board, and I'm having trouble finding the basics such as this.

 

I'm a longtime RP veteran of http://www.comicvine.com/, so I know the basics of RPing in general, but I want to be more clear on this site in particular's rules and workings.

 

Please do forgive my ignorance, I just need some help getting started, as some of the rules here seem kind of foreign, such as how is appears we make a new character for most RPs?

 

Back at Comic Vine, we use one character for many, many RPs. Maybe someone could give me the grand tour of the general rules of Nexus RP?

 

If it's any help, I'm looking to start RPing here in a Fallout RP. Oh, that brings me to another question, about how open RPs are to strangers. On Comic Vine there was a section where we could write a character bio which could be at any time viewed by clicking an option on any of your posts, or viewed through your profile, so if it was an 'open' RP, you could just join. From what I've seen, you need permission for most things?

 

Again, forgive my ignorance, it's just quite different than what I'm used to, and I really do want to enjoy Nexus RP as well. Thanks in advance for any who choose to help me.

Hello! Good to see you interested in the RP section! :D A lot of the rules depend on the creators of the RP in question, but there are some things that are common between most of them.

 

Here on the Nexus, RPs are not really "open" in the sense that you can just pick one and start posting - unless the creator says otherwise, that's a no-no. Each individual RP has its own rule set, established by the original poster of the RP in question. So in addition to following Nexus site rules, you must follow the rules on the discussion thread for the RP you want to join. RPs here generally have at least two threads - one discussion thread in the "RP Announcements" section for out-of-character comments, questions, and character sheets, and one thread for the roleplay itself in the "Wilderness" section. If you are interested in joining an RP, you can voice your interest on the discussion thread and then work with the creator and members from there to make a character for you to use.

 

Currently, there are only two active RPs here on the Nexus, but you are in luck; one of them happens to be a brand new Fallout-themed RP. You can find the discussion/rules thread here: http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/2689694-fallout-yosemite-discussion/

 

Both of these RPs have many of the same members in them, and as such, the rules are pretty much the same. :tongue: Most of us are veterans of the Nexus forum RPs, and we'd be glad to help you get started.

 

As far as characters go, they are made specifically for each roleplay and generally are not carried over from one to another. Furthermore, unless the discussion thread for an RP says otherwise, you need your character sheet approved in that thread by the creator of the RP before you are allowed to post in the roleplay itself. This is to get any problems with a character worked out before you actually start participating with others. This process also serves as your "permission" to join.

But another thing: How do the rules in profanity go in an RP? Back at Comuc Vine, foul language wasn't allowed anywhere but the RPG and Fan-Fiction boards, coming out of your character's mouths (censored by one or more *s of coarse)

Most profane words are automatically censored by the forum. However, some people prefer to censor their own words themselves.

 

As far as I know, profanity is OK coming from your character in small amounts and within reason. I think most of us who are still active here have resolved to use it sparingly in our posts.

.....And yes, one of the whole two RPs alive in the forum atm is a Fallout one :thumbsup:
