ax1f
Hi everybody, I'm new to DA:O and mods. DA:O is absolutely a nice game and i planned to buy and mod it on Steam. I got a few questions before i do that: 1.Can i mod Steam version of DA:O?2.Will my Steam account get banned or blacklisted?3.Will the game update and overwrite the mods automatically?4.Can i do all these above to Steam version of TES4 Oblivion? Thanks a lot!
Thandal
Hi, Ax1f; Welcome to the DANexus! You have questions, we have (some) answers. But first, a note from your fellow Forumites: Better to ask about ONE topic at a time. For example, I might not reply to you at all if I can't tell you about modding the Steam version of Oblivion, (which I can't... ) On to your queries! 1.Can i mod Steam version of DA:O?-- Yes It works the same with Steam EXCEPT, the locations of certain files are different than with the retail disc install. You'll have to learn both "the usual ones" and the Steam ones in order to get things working. Not hard, just that most ReadMe's won't even recognize that there are these differences. 2.Will my Steam account get banned or blacklisted?-- Not at all. (Why would it? ) 3.Will the game update and overwrite the mods automatically?-- DA mods do not go into the same folders as the game files, so Steam neither knows nor cares about any mods. Updates will be applied automagically (that's part of the point of Steam, after all...) and if that breaks a mod, oh well! 4.Can i do all these above to Steam version of TES4 Oblivion?-- See my remark above. See also the mini tutorial in Post #3 here: "Using DA Mods for Dummies", and for some "What do you use?" lists, see: "Good Mods (Opinions)". Have Fun!
DarkeWolf
Hi, Ax1f; Welcome to the DANexus! You have questions, we have (some) answers. But first, a note from your fellow Forumites: Better to ask about ONE topic at a time. You'll have to learn both "the usual ones" and the Steam ones in order to get things working. Not hard, just that most ReadMe's won't even recognize that there are these differences. Agreed. Honestly, I prefer the disk install. It makes it much easier to get down what is already a tricky (for some) method of modding a game. Also, some of the mod installers such as DA Modder and DA ModManager dont install to the correct folders in STEAM version. 2.Will my Steam account get banned or blacklisted?-- Not at all. (Why would it? ) Nope, Bioware doesnt care if you mod out their games. As long as you're not distributing copyrighted material in your mods. But as RB said, nah, it wont cause any issues with your account, just for modding the game 3.Will the game update and overwrite the mods automatically?-- DA mods do not go into the same folders as the game files, so Steam neither knows nor cares about any mods. Updates will be applied automagically (that's part of the point of Steam, after all...) and if that breaks a mod, oh well! HOWEVER- unless you set up STEAM to disable auto-updating, some of the patches that bioware has released for the game CAN BREAK some mods. Or cause you to have to go to lengths in order to get them to work. Such as the item add scripts which were broken in patch 1.03 and 1.04. See the quote that I have in my sig from RB about making sure that those work after updating the patches 4.Can i do all these above to Steam version of TES4 Oblivion?-- See my remark above. See also the mini tutorial in Post #3 here: "Using DA Mods for Dummies", and for some "What do you use?" lists, see: "Good Mods (Opinions)". Have Fun! My reply is colored red in the above quote ;)Indeed, welcome to the Nexus, hope that you enjoy your stay. :)

DarkeWolf
Not a problem at all, always glad to help out around here. Don't be afraid to ask if you've got questions :) Great to hear :) yeah, the Dragon Age forums have gotten a bit slow lately, but we've still got a great group of people here in our branch of the site :)
legionarius
ax1f thank you for the questions, and DarkeWolf and Thandal thanks a lot for the answers! I was going to open a similar post about the Steam version of the game. The truth is I would like to buy the boxed version of "Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition", but in Italy where I live I do not find it in the shops:/ Moreover I would like to play it in English, but I don't know if the boxed version sold in Italy is going to be multi language. If I have understood well the problem is that the Steam version of Dragon Age is more difficult to mod, and I love to mod games. But I love to collect game boxes with guides and everything else too, so if I can choose between boxed version and digital download I always choose the boxed version. At this rate I think my only option is to wait the boxed edition of "Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition", since buying Dragon Age + expansion + download contents would really costs me too much! See the following regarding the UE from Fernando Melo (BioWare staff) over on the BSN : Fernando Melo wrote...Cavalieroscuro wrote...Hi,I up this because at today,October 22,in Italy every shop can't say anything about this game.It can't be preordered from any store, any store sell this (like Gamestop,Multiplayer.it ecc).I preordered it from blahdvd, but really I want to know if it contains italian subtitleBest bet is to continue to check with local retailers - alternatively, you may consider purchasing from a webstore elsewhere and shipping the box (some retailers may offer free shipping). The PC & X360 version has English VO, and English, Spanish & Italian subtitles. There is also a X360 German VO / Txt version (like Origins did).PS3 has English, French and German VO, and English, French, German, Spanish and Italian subtitles. So it sounds like if you want the retail disc version of the UE, you're good-to-go!
DarkeWolf
Legionarius- not a problem, its always great to see when users find their answers from other people's questions :D Not really that familiar with the UE version, however on the Regular edition of the retail disks, Disk 1 contained all the game files, in English. Disk 2 contained files for additional languages. I would assume that they would do a similar setup for the UE. I purchase a lot of my games off of Ebay. But being here in the US, I dont have to deal with international shipping. I did a bit of checking, and ebay MIGHT have a site for Italian buyers/sellers. You can check it out if you want to. http://www.ebay.it/classicoBuy.com and Amazon.com might also be some sources for you to check out. Tho I dont know if either of those has an Italian listing like ebay might have.
legionarius
Thanks a lot for the informations. I've decided to buy the boxed version from a famous English website, that ships products even in Italy. In this way I will save money, and I will avoid to wait, since in Italian shops I still do not find it. I will have to wait one/two weeks the package, but in this way I think I've solved all the problems :)
ax1f
to legionarius: Its always great to see when users find their answers from my questions  BTW, I'm interested to buy this "UE" too. It's always been fun to collect all the stuff about my favourite games.Since i saw your reply, i've been thinking of these below:First, I am a Steam platform user, bought a lot of games for my account. That's why i post this topic here.Second, as we know that certain games(products) can be registed (activated) on Steam. Usually the way is open the case, find the serial on the booklet(manual). Click Steam client menu "Games" - "Activate a product on Steam", input the serial you found in to the blank then click "next". Steam can recognizes your serials(games) and bind it with your account forever. After this you can download your game through Steam client anytime anywhere. Here comes another question: if i bought this "UE" ver, can i also bind it to my Steam account? I mean, then i can have both "UE" retail box with Steam digital ver. And that will be brilliant  Since you decided to buy "UE" box, i hope you are also a Steam user, then you can try it out for me  I can also find this "UE" ver here in China. Though the price is quite high  Edited December 9, 2010 by ax1f
