Pitchguest
The topic is the question. I'm wondering because I was thinking of making a topic here to discuss (even though it's probably the worst forum to debate anything that's heated), but I had a look-see in the threads and I was immediately discouraged. You cannot discuss religion. At all. Ok, fair enough. I suppose that topic is far too congealed already anyway and any beating of the horse would just reignite that old spark. So, yeah, I understand to discuss religion on this forum. But then there is everything else that is not about religion. So like I said, I had a look-see in this forum and I was kind of appaled. Not with what was discussed, or how you discussed it (although some people should really learn to be more polite), but with how quickly the threads were locked. The most recent one, the discussion about holocaust denial, just when it became interesting... it was locked. In the predetermination that it would become ugly. Even when it hadn't. I'm looking at it now and I'm not seeing anything that could turn it remotely obscene. But the moderators word is law, so... that's that. Like I said, probably the worst forum for a heated debate. But, anyway, I'm curious. I'm interested that it's acknowledged that discussions can turn passionate and , yet it's discouraged to do so (excepting the unnecessary "you gently caress your mother" comments that comes across) - seeing as they're locked. So what am I allowed to talk about (debate about)? For example, if for instance I wanted to talk about abortion, would I be able to do that? I'm asking because the people here have fascinating thoughts and I'm interested to hear more about them. But not if the thread should be locked just for one or two paltry disagreements. In fact that's what a debate is about. To work around what you disagree with and enter a common ground. I just don't see having a meaningful conversation here about anything that could turn passionate very quickly should a moderator choose to lock it for whatever reason they see fit. Thoughts? Vagrant0
I just don't see having a meaningful conversation here about anything that could turn passionate very quickly should a moderator choose to lock it for whatever reason they see fit. This is why... With passion comes heated arguments, topics where there is no room for a change in views (religion, politics in some cases), onesided debates where everyone else is "wrong", open insults and hostility, threads which go wildly off-topic, or threads which border on religious beliefs, and cannot be discussed without touching on them in some way (such as abortion). These sorts of threads get locked, sometimes before anything even starts simply because time and again this stuff happens. The state of the debate section is as bad as it is because you have people who have spoken grudges against others, repeatedly show hostility towards the same people, and let it bleed into whatever discussion is occurring. If not for the effort of a few to remain open, civil, unbiased, and on topic, and aware of those things which are not appropriate for debate, this whole section would likely be closed down. That said, moderator action is not something open for public debate. You have been warned in the past, and have been apparently banned for it. The rules exist for a reason, and would have been bought up though other means if this was not the case. Best to accept that or move on. Locked.
