Making 3D Models for Fallout New Vegas

Hi. I'm learning 3D modelling at the moment and I am very interested in making my own models for Fallout New Vegas. Can anyone point me in the direction of helpful tutorials? I already know basic modelling and texturing but when I tried to import a simple model into New Vegas it showed up as a red diamond with an exclamation on it, something which signifies error in the model I guess. I checked google and couldn't come across any obvious ones for NIF files.
