Sudden Instability in GIMP - Game-Crashing Textures

Okay, this is driving me crazy.

I'm working on making textures for WarKirby's castle mod. Until quite recently, I've been thrilled with the GIMP. It's a sophisticated and full-featured program that I got entirely for free because it's open source. Over the last few days I'm running into an exciting little problem (aargh) wherein some of the textures crash the CS, the game, and on at least one occasion my whole computer.

I can't figure out how to fix the problem other than starting over from scratch, and unlike their normal maps, these are not exactly simple textures to recreate. GIMP itself registers no error.

Has anyone else had this or a similar problem?

Hmm... Checked the DLLs?

I haven't updated GIMP in a while...

Does this happen on the FIRST edit of the textures, or after you've saved and loaded them?

No, I haven't checked that. I did update GIMP a couple of months ago, but no problems previously.

No problems opening game dds files.

No problems saving them most of the time; occasional error saying dds plugin doesn't recognize the texture is fixed by using "save as" instead of "save." Unable to trace direct connection between this and crashes as the instances don't seem to line up.

No problems loading textures in Nifskope.

Problems occur only in game and CS and only when texture would be visible on the screen in a cell.

I ended up having to redo the textures anyway (I get to redo them again tonight or tomorrow) because they weren't perfectly to the specs in WarKirby's head. I'll see if I can find anything about the dds plugin and normalmap plugin, but given it's not really updated it's unlikely anything can be done.

Hmm. Mipmaps?

Always use save-as.

DID you remove mipmaps, or does your texture have two sets of them?

I normally don't generate mipmaps on my brand new textures, and I don't save the ones from game texes when editing. It's never been a problem before...
