duncanlambert
Without resorting to a lot of swearing i'll tell you of my issue. Have a seat! I refused to get FONV on the xbox cos mods give the game a replayability value the likes have never been seen before. But to my horror, the first time it started up it took around 15 mins to load. Strange as FO3 ran on my pc with next to no issues ('cept when i get a bit over zealous with cramming mods on it), when the game loaded in the doctors office i found this unsettling man staring at me without moving for ages. After it freaked me out for a while i hit escape to go to the menu to see if there was an option to turn off perverted freaky old men who like to do nothing but stare. Failing that i returned to the game where the man started talking to me finally. after he finished his sentence tho he resumed his unsettling staring episode. Several impulsive clicks later and a lot of returning to the options menu i got to a point where the old man was talking to me without a dialog box. His mouth was moving but no voice came out. returning to the menu made all the sounds that were meant to happen over a period of 6 seconds, happen in the space of approximately 3 seconds. This behavior is commonplace throughout the game and i have stopped playing it as i am missing important dialog. I also have no sound other then the wind blowing abiance, but everytime i return to the menu is always plays the last 6 seconds of sounds rushed into 3 seconds. Looking through the forums i see that sound issues are commonplace but none have exactly the same symptoms as myself and i have tried most of the solutions offered by you generous tech heads out there to no avail. After a little research i found that my soundcard IS listed among the FONV incompatible lists and i need to update the driver, only....it IS up to date so i'm officially out of ideas until the newest patch is released. secksegai
What is your sound card? Honestly, if it's incompatible that leads me to question the rest of your setup. I've been able to run games below system requirements, but certain aspects can't be ignored as they're required by the software (like certain shaders for graphics for instance). Sound is rarely an issue unless you're trying to use a basic integrated realtek chipset at the higher settings usually. If you're on a desktop, unless you've got some finicky high end sound card, you could always replace that as you'd have plenty of options for a variety of budgets.Notebook/laptop - short of an external soundcard setup like that offered from Soundblaster... not much else I'd also check if you've got any special codec packages installed - ffdshow has some issues when running alongside FO3/FONV
duncanlambert
my soundcard is a Realtek AC97 Audio. When i first got my pc i had a lot of issues with sound so i disabled the default soundcard and bought the Realtek. Its hardly a high end one but i have little intention of purchasing a new one because of one game. Furthermore as i already said, FO3 runs with no issues whatsoever so i cannot understand whats different with FONV.
frank lee
I'm sorry I can't remember exactly what this is (I've did so much to get it running) but there's an FFDShow deal. . . I think you have to make an exception in one of the codecs that tries to 'help' FoNV reproduce the sound. I had some horrendous speech lagging before I did this. I can't even find the damn control now but I hope this is a clue.

I find it hard to believe that FO3 runs with no issues whatsoever =P Granted, it wasn't NEARLY as problematic as FONV has been for me. I'm kinda surprised that was the card you picked up, as you should have had a better soundblaster equivalent in the same price range, especially since that chipset is commonly included on boards. As For the FFDSHOW, its actually an issue for FO3 too, but depending on when you install your codec pack it may automatically add the exe to the disabled lists. Also, might want to make sure you're not expecting too much performance out of the audio and tone down the settings for at least troubleshooting purposes. duncanlambert
tbh, at the time i bought the soundcard i didnt have a lot of options, as i wasnt sure what i should be looking for. I just wanted to be able to hear s***, cos my pc was having a bit of a spaz when i bought it. I ended up buying one from either a Curry's or Comet chain. Nowadays i know better then buying gear from them. I Swear down that FO3 Used to be pretty much stable as a table (dunno where i got that euphomism) Only issue i had was a weird clicking sound in the background (possibly related to sound issues?) but i always had the radio on in the game, and when i did the clicking stopped. Upon reflection i didnt have any music either from the radio, just 3Dogs voice occationally popping up every now and then. I'm having trouble locating the sound options on FONV (noobish i know) can anyone point me in the right direction? Its not in the *options* menu in the autostart. secksegai
From what I remember, FO3 at release wasn't bugged as badly as FONV at release, but it had plenty of issues. I've been using FOMM so I haven't used the original loader in a long while, but that should have the options you're looking for.
duncanlambert
okay, now i'm a little concerned. I Use FOMM as well, and i tried the options in that as well as the options in the main menu. There are no mention of sound options. I feel i may be starting to breach the source of my issue. secksegai
You got to use the launcher, the options aren't available in FOMM, just graphics.
duncanlambert
i'm not using FOMM to alter the options! When i hit options on the launcher isnt giving me any sound options..... Why do i get the feeling this is all STEAM's fault? Edited December 28, 2010 by duncanlambert
