crash on startup

ok, not sure what happened between this morning and now, I got home tonight, I tried to install the advanced armor recon gear stuff, FOMM wouldn't do it.

tried to start FONV, crashes right off the bat

disabled ALL mods, same results

ran the file verification, found 5 files needing updating, did that, still crashes...

i just renamed my data and mod folders and am downloading the files again from steam at a painfully slow 1MB/s (on my 25MB connection) and will see what happens.. at this rate I might get to play tomorrow morning assuming this fixes it.

If you can't get to the main title screen without it crashing (and all mods disabled) its EXTREMELY unlikely its a mod causing the issue by that point.

First thing I'd check is if anything is stealing focus away during the initialization process, as the gamebryo engine is pretty picky about that, like a web page or utility program, or even virus protection notification.

it was due to a botched mod install after all,

I'm trying to install gophers recon gear, which is a FOMOD install, but I get an access denied error on the dotnetscript.dll when I try to activate it in the package manager. so i just extracted the files and dumped them in and they hosed up something in teh process.

took me 4 hours last night to revalidate game files, and go through re-installing all my mods one at a time to figure out where the problem was.

I still can't install anything via FOMOD...

1mb/sec is slow? Consider me stuck in the mud. Ah this happened to me with FO3 from a mod overdose. Do you even see the first slide, where it says gamebryo engine, facegen, havok, etc? If you do, than the best thing to do is to figure out which mods are the last ones you installed and delete them. Yes, sometimes you will have to delete them rather than just disable them. If you don't even get to the first slide, FOMM or NVSE are in a scuffle and you may need to revert to older known working versions. Good luck.

Crashing before the first slide screen is a sign of a mod missing its master file. If, for instance, someone with the Caravan Pack content accidentally forgets to uncheck CaravanPack.esm when making a mod, it uses the ESM as a master. They pass this mod on to others without the same esm master, and boom - CTD before even the first slide shows up, since the master is missing.

Crashing before the menu screen but AFTER the first slide is the sign of something having been changed in GECK which the game cannot handle having changed. Examples of this include ANY Leveled list beginning in GECK with the letters VHD (Vegas Hoover Damn, I assume.) Changing ANY leveled list with this prefix crashes the game before the menu screen. I have tested this using esp files which change ONLY ONE of these lists and it has caused this post-first-slide crash EVERY time. This is a confirmed no-no. Those VHD lists are off limits.

As for NVSE and NVMM in a scuffle...that's a new one. Sometimes I wonder where this stuff comes from, I really do....

  • 2 weeks later...

have the same right now: I was playing with the wasteland defense and real time settler mod, so after a time windows says: Fallout NV doesn't work anymore (literal translation)... so i started FNV again: crash when I load my save file. Restart again: load save file, but crashes when I'm playing 2 seconds...

anyone has the solution>????
