DubbaD
Am I the only one here who's sick and tired of this excuse for any sufficiently-advanced magic in a mod? Edited April 14, 2015 by DubbaD
modder3434
Its not just a excuse though, given anything that is quite advanced added by a mod, its plausible that the dwemer did do it at some point in order to keep immersion of the game alive. The dwemer airships, dwemer muskets etc, make the most since as having been made by the dwemer versus saying any of the other mythological races did. Hell vanilla lore based games show the dwemer have robots! granted their powered by steam, magic and souls, but its a robot. As for using dwemer as a pretext for magic mods....think of it this way, while every other race and culture in this universe, the only ones who placed no limits on themselves were the dwemer. with no limits (ethics, religion, tyrannical govt etc) they had the ability to work/ study/ and craft with utter abandon. Granted that did come back to bite them....but still, if they had the means to create a god they certainly had means to make advanced magics. So I guess ultimately the answer to your question is yes. Once you think on it the dwemer become the perfect way to implement just about anything that is unknown or alien to the rest of Tamrial.
Lachdonin
It's kind of a lazy way to do things, especially since its not really necessary... The Dwemer had some.special things, sure, but they weren't particularly unique. The Redguard have cannons, the Imperials, Redguard and Altmer all have used Airships. Imperials, Altmer and Dunmer have space ships, and the Lhajiit have a colony on one of the moons. Hell, the Battlespire was once only one of a series of satellite fortresses between Mundis and Oblivion. Then there's the Internet (Dreamsleave), Alinor Orrery, Firebirds, Clockwork City, all the weird s#*! in Adamantia... Acting like the Dwemer are the only source of weird techno-magic shows that people aren't doing their research first.
modder3434
True I can admit its a little lazy, but most players and modders aren't as well versed in all the lore as some people are (looking at you Lachdonin) Despite this most users tend to want someway to explain why mod added things are in the world, especially if it seems weird, unique or too modern in comparison to the technology in the current verse. An easy way to do this is use the dwemer. It provides an easy (though maybe somewhat lazy) way to explain away mod added content, without breaking immersion (for those who aren't well read in the verse) or requiring the user to either be a lore master, or provide a history lesson on the mod homepage. With the exception of Clockwork City, which would be recognized by Morrowind players, most of those listed would go right over everyone's head. While the dwemer are not the only "weird techno-magic" people, they are the most recognizable as such among the bulk of the users and modders. Its almost like a brand name in the market....do I go with this brand I've never heard of before, or do I go with a brand I've used before and am familer with? Sorry Lhajiit , I'm going with the Dwemer...
Staff BigBizkit Posted April 15, 2015 Staff Share Posted April 15, 2015 Before you call modders lazy for using the dwemer as a general excuse for advanced technology, realize that beth does the same thing.
DubbaD
@BigBizkit Looks like Bethesda need to take some apocrypha and encompass that into their newer games. Oh, and Lachdonin, it's nice to see you outside of /r/TESlore and the Beth. Forums. :)
Lachdonin
Oh, and Lachdonin, it's nice to see you outside of /r/TESlore and the Beth. Forums. :)That could totally be someone else! It's a common name! It's not like I don't have a life outside of internet forums! Before you call modders lazy for using the dwemer as a general excuse for advanced technology, realize that beth does the same thing.Yeah, which is one reason why I am so impressed with ESO. They've done their research, added to the lore and enriched practically everything they've touched. From the Chimeri Constructs, to the Ayleid Towers, to the Moonpath and the Altmeri Orrery, they have delved into the coolest aspects of the lore rather than relying on a shallow one-trick-pony like the Dwemer.
