While he does seem to be a better fighter you would think Zevran as an assasin would have better skills at opening locks and dealing with traps. May go back to Lil for a bit.

Zevran is intended to be a pure Assassin, a killer for hire. Leliana as a Bard (=spy) is your thief. It becomes really obvious when you recruit them past level 25 because then you get Zev with max poison, max stealth and one or two traps and Leliana with max stealing, max traps and usually no stealth at all. There are mods that allow you to choose their talents and skills when you recruit them so it isn't written in stone but that is the way the creators intended them to be.

I use a mod that allows you to decide what spells and talents new companions have, it can be a bit of a pain when you only want to change a couple of things, but it's easy enough to turn on at the right time. I've recently been trying out this one, I think it might work better for me then I can easily change the PCs that need changing and leave the rest as received, you do need to becareful or you can end up with naked and weaponless PC's

As far as the spy vs assasin skills debate goes I guess I'll just have to work on the respective characters.

I've been experementing with different race/class fighting styles and skills. My dual-wielding HNF warrior is my best work so far. I am also experementing with a DEM Rogue trying the archer route and a HNM warrior (that is human noble male correct?) specializing in two-handed weapons (great sword). The elf completed the tower at Ostagar and my HNM is about to complete the tower. The warrior is using the Chaisened flatblade.

If you are going for the trophies, check them out so you can see what you want to go for all, some, or not bothered. That might affect your choices, you can view them in your profile before you start a game, some are secret and I've no idea what they are unless someone is willing to tell us.

As someone who now has ALL the trophies (except for certain Mage talent-tree ones, I've only played a Mage once. But those aren't "Secret" anyway...) I could tell you. But honestly, why? The only real value to them is emotional; getting one awarded to you in-game through doing something you didn't even know was "badge-worthy". If you know you're going to get one by doing this-or-that, it changes your playing style and reduces any "Ahhh! Cool." that you might have experienced. (jmtc)

In general I'm just testing various fighting styles. The archery system is not as buggy as I have heard so the rogue (DEM) is my archery tester. My dwarf is my weapon and shield. My HNM warrior is my test for the brute force fighting style (big weapons), and my dual-wielder is my finesse fighter. As said before which character I play depends on what kind of mood I'm in. So far only my dual-wielder has gotten the "jump kill" on the tower ogre. My two-hander set off indomitable and kept from being knocked down by the ogre's charges and slams.

When you say testing how long do you test for? It might only be me, but I found as I worked my way through all the different fighting or spell types, some I hated to the point where I want to just lay down, die and start over, but stubbornness wouldn't allow me to do that, so I ploughed on and every time I've surprised myself and ended the game thinking, if I could have used the talents like that from the start of the game I would have been "incredibly awesome".

I couldn't play like you do it's all to clinical for me, I wouldn't enjoy the game as a whole.

Thandal - get your point about the surprise trophies and cheating, not knowing what they are I don't even know if it's possible, I know it is with some of the others, especially with some of the mods. I have no ambitions to get them all, but agree it is quite a nice feeling when it flashes up you have just got one.

Perhaps choosing the word test is a bad choice. I merely want to see how each style compares, all have their ups and downs. All have interrupts which are good.

I'm having a problem with the puzzle that allows you to get the true command word for Shale (finally found the place.) Sooner or later I'll figure it out. Until then my dual-wielding character is stuck for a short while. (I have to turn sound off to shut that kid up grrrrrr....)

 Know what you mean, she never shuts up does she. I play with headphones so it's easy to just slip them round my neck. There is more than one way to do the puzzle, keep trying you'll get there. I always find it easier to work backwards toward the flame rather than get the flame to the end point. My first PT I hadn't figured out how to put the party on hold and set them and myself on fire a few times :woot: at least I didn't kill anyone.

I don't know if I could compare, I often leave my character to use the tactics I've set and take over one of the other characters or I use the extra dog slot mod.

Well I'm short on time this morning but later I'll try to do my comparisons on the combat styles later if it matters at all.

Decided to go out on a limb and give the mage a try, to put it simply I thought my dual-wielding warrior made a mess but holy kaboom Batman, a fireball makes for a great introduction :P

Thanks Thandal for explaining the magic system to me.
