Fallout 3 Crashing Because of AI?

As I was playing Fallout 3, I encountered a group of dogs in the metro tunnels. When I was sneaking (i.e they were combative) the game was fine, but as I caused them to be alert the game immediately crashed. Everything had been fine before, so chalking it off as a bad spawn or glitch, I disabled the ai, killed them and moved on. Then I encountered the same effect with some raiders. Again figuring that it must have been a glitch in the cramped tunnels or something, I repeated the process and moved on. But now when I got to the mall, as soon as the super mutants looked at me the game crashes. Anybody heard of a fix for this problem?
