brokenergy
I don't know much about hardware (software is a different story), so I need advice about the best specs for a gamer rig that doesn't blow my budget out of the water (it's not a huge budget). I have never build a PC before, so I really don't know where to start but here. I really appreciate it if anyone could give me advice of the best products available. Also note that I know there are tons of threads about this issue but wading though so many pages will burn my noodle  So starting afresh will help me understand more about PC building. Paxan_1
Hi BE,it isn't that difficult. It is like Lego for adults :) You need to think about what you need and want and what you have. In most times it is not necessary to buy a new DVD drive. So what do you need, it's not that much, here a little list:- Mainboard (that big plat on the side where all the stuff is plugged in)- CPU (you have only the choice between AMD and INTEL)- RAM - Graphic Card (here you can choose between AMD (again) and NVIDIA)- PSU (the thing for delivering the 12V for all the components inside)- Harddrive (the thing where you can store all your Software :) )- DVD drive and a - Case (there are pink ones available too, but maybe the salesman will laugh ..., have bought a black one myself  ) If you have all this you "only" need to connect it. And if all is all right the machine should work (praying is also very helpful :D ). Well, for a gaming PC i would suggest a quad core cpu with a nice powerfull graphic card, but without to know your money limit i can't help very much. okay, cu and marry ChristmasPaxan
Erik005
One of the most important things you need you need to consider is the resolution of your monitor. With a lower resolution (up to 1920*1080) the processor is more important, and with a higher resolution (1920*1080 and up) the graphics card is more important. brokenergy
My limit is about $1500 Aus (that includes monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers), I can find parts easily and cheaply (I know several places that will give me good discounts during the festive season, even some bundles). The problem is that I don't really know what products I should look out for, I don't want to find out that I was ripped for shoddy products. I don't need a new work PC because I already use one for everything but making a work PC to a gamer's rig (especially with a cheap model) doesn't work when your computer lags. So separating the work and fun sides feels the most logical thing to do and will allow more space for more important stuff while you still have fun. It's also good because I don't have to replace it for the next 3 years or such because my old graphics card isn't going to keeping up with newer titles anymore and will be out of commission in less than a year. So in short it's a good opportunity to help me in future builds and allow me to understand. Plus I love lego
Paxan_1
Well, 1500AUD are ~1100€, you can build a nice rip with that. Here is my first suggestion how i would configure it. The price is around 1000€ without monitor, so it needs to be tweaked a little. HDD - store: Western Digital Caviar Green 2000GB, 64MB Cache, SATA II (WD20EARS) ~80€ SSD- system: Super Talent Ultradrive GX MLC 64GB, 2.5", SATA II (FTM64GX25H) ~92€ CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition, 6x 3.20GHz, boxed (HDT90ZFBGRBOX) ~200€ RAM: Kingston HyperX T1 DIMM XMP Kit 4GB PC3-16000U CL9-9-9-27 (DDR3-2000) (KHX2000C9AD3T1K2/4GX) ~90€ Graphic: MSI R6850-PM2D1GD5/OC, Radeon HD 6850, 1024MB GDDR5, 2x DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort, PCIe 2.1 ~160€ Mainboard: ASUS Crosshair IV Formula, 890FX (dual PC3-10667U DDR3) (90-MIBCN0-G0EAY00Z) ~170€ Case: Lian Li PC-7FN schwarz, schallgedämmt ~125€ PSU: be quiet! Straight Power E7 CM 580W ATX 2.3 (E7-CM-580W/BN122) ~90€ You should have a look over it, the components aren't the "cheap" ones and if they are available in Australia. Have written the prices in Euro behind them so you can compare. If you have a look into my profile, it is like a new AMD version of my pc ;) Edited December 25, 2010 by Paxan_1
prandiningrat
Processor AMD Phenom II X6 1090T BE, as paxan suggested above is good, cause other than good performance, that processor also easy to overclock..if you prefer Intel, I would recommend Intel Core i7-875K or Intel Core i7-870.. You should choose the platform first when build new PC, Intel or AMD..
brokenergy
I thought about it for a bit and I have chosen a "phantom rig" but I like to double check if it is fine. Motherboard: Gigabyte/Asus P55 Bases motherboard Graphics Card: Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD5870 1GB HD: 1TB SATA II HDD RAM: 4GB DDR3 CPU: Intel Core i5 QC 760 2.66GHz Case: Lian Li K58 PSU: Antec EarthWatts EA650 650W Up and all it will all add up to about $1000 Aus. I'm not going to build a monster but I'm not going to waste my money on nothing as well. I don't know if I should go with this or improve some things. I would love to know if I'm going in the right direction with this. Any help will be appreciated.
urbex
That looks pretty good. Comes to to $880 on newegg but I know everything is overpriced overseas.Do really need intel? For mid tier performance, AMD usually gives you more bang for your buck.If you are going to go with them, at least wait a week for their new "Sandy Bridge" chipset to release. You'll either save money or get better performance for the same price.
