synnworld
Am I the only one who find games the plays on melee the way elder scrolls, fable, and insert a third game generically boring? I am a person who always liked things like swordsmen and so on, but when it game to games especially that played around the fantasy basis with knights and wizards or mages, I always went the route of the mage, because I always thought the warrior playing style was boring. Even with mods like DR and UV it continued to be boring just swinging a sword and some times with a cool looking power move but that was it. The way I see it, and this is my own personal opinion, melee especially in a game like oblivion lacked technique and relied a lot on overpowering strength. A mage could play alone using simply magic ( heck i have done almost everything from pure summoner to pure illusionist....oh the chaos) and still hold some sort of interest even if that interest was purely a theme,do to mos like arcane archer (just to stir up the mix) the same could even be side about any type of bow, or stealth user. With warriors though it is different, no matter what you do, no matter how you move or play it always feels the same, and hell even if you just try to hybrid all three the experience feels watered down, just because the feel of there being no type of real technique or structure set up into melee of games of this type. KI was wondering was I the only one who thought this, or this someone else have similar thoughts about it, or about the other ways of playing like the magic system. KaizerFaust
I was pretty tired of the same old sword swings myself, so I downloaded the DMC Sword Fighting Style to add some zing to it.
WastelandAssassin
well, to tell you the truth, i feel the same waythis is why i never play a warrior characterbut then again, i don't remember seeing even one game that had a good melee system, that didn't get boring as far as i have seen, DR 6 is trying to make the fighting more exciting, because now you have to think and adapt, not just swing away at your enemybut then again, i didn't like DR 5, and since i'm not playing a warrior (and probably never will), i don't think i'll give DR 6 a try the thing is, the only type of playing that i think is really interesting, is playing as a mage, because of the endless amount of options you have (thank the nine divines for spell making alters )this is the only type of character that i can really change it's style constantly, and still use the same skills and the same character (i mean, you can play a stealth mage, you can play the summoner, you can be a hell-blasting destruction mage, you name it, you can probably play it ) so you are definitely not the only one that feels this way, and i am sure that we are two of many who feel this waybut quite frankly, i don't think that this could be changedthe fact is, if the creators of the game will create such an elaborate melee system, that will always be interesting, they will probably not make it for an RPG game, they will make it for a only melee game (at least, i don't think that any game company will make an amazing melee system, and also create equally amazing magic and archery systems, to match) and there is also another problem, and i think that this is the biggest problem (at least for me)i mean, we have already established that the melee system needs to be improvedbut how?? i mean, i can't think of a better melee system, or any way to make oneso if anyone thinks that he knows how to make a melee system that will keep you entertained for the entire length of the game, please do explain itand if no one can think of such a system, than i don't think any such system could be made....... (it's sad, really)

(it's sad, really)This is why I really said a game of this type lol, not to knock the makers or anything but one of the biggest things I see is that there doesn't seem to be much researched done when it came to sword or weapon styles, and stances in general. The character hold weapons the same generic and with mods unrealistic way you would see in a animated series. Maybe I am wrong it won't be the first time and no one is always right but not all weapon styles held a word and shield the same way, While fighting someone in armor you wouldn't target the same places you would with a mace. The continent that Oblivion is placed in, whole theme is wrapped around quoting a critique my someone said about the theme "Rome and japan mixed up in Africa", and if you look at it just from an artistic point of view it is, so why not build on that Rome, japan, and Africa all had weapon styles and different ways of using weapons (especially Africa), so why not research them and get creative with the weapons style instead of just going a hack hack slash basis? WastelandAssassin
well, i think that the problem isn't actually with how the weapons lookthe problem is with giving each style it's own wielding animations and fighting animationsfor this to be done, it must be on a new game (i don't think that you can actually change all of those animations, and add several animations of one type to Oblivion)so if anything, this might be a good request for Skyrim, but i doubt that it could be done for Oblivion i mean, i have seen mods that add spears and such, but i'm really not sure how you can make new stances and unique attack moves per weaponbut the idea is quite good, i have to say

We don't need a whole new game to do it, we just need again someone who is willing to take the time and do the research and willing to try. Now another problem to deal with would be the AI, and the differences in speed and damage that had to be calculated would all be the area of a programmer an area I now absolutely nothing about), so I don't even have a sense to how difficult this might be. WastelandAssassin
i think you misunderstood what i said, so let me clarifymaking the animations shouldn't be a problem, for an experienced animatorthe problem is to make different weapons use different animationsyou see, i am almost sure that you can't just add a new animation, and make the game use itand if you can do this, it will probably involve a lot of OBSE scripting to get this doneso this involves quite a lot of work, to get each weapon to use it's own animations (if it's even possible, which i'm still not sure it is) if this is possible, then all the other changes should be quite easy to doconfiguring the AI shouldn't be that much of a big deal, but it might make this incompatible with other mods (can't really avoid it)as for configuring the speeds and damages, you can define this when making the weapons i still think that the worst problem here is to make each weapon use it's own set of animations, as you can't just add a new animation type to the CS (at least, i haven't seen anyone who has done this, nor any evidence that this could be done)

Nurfhurter02
I would just try to find the best thing for melee and if you don't like that than well you either have to deal with that melee style or try to make your own there is not much else you can do Edited December 28, 2010 by Nurfhurter02
