Mage Build

Has anyone made a pure mage yet? I'm going to start one soon. I want to do Thieve's Guild and Dark Brotherhood quests mostly. She probably won't do the main quest.

I think she will use her own magic and staffs in a fight but not other weapons. She will try to remain hidden unless sure of victory.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. My starting build is below:

Name: Malegra

Class: Witch

Race: Altmer

Gender: Female

Birthsign: The Atronach

Specialization: Stealth

Attributes: Intelligence, Willpower

Major Skills: Mysticism, Conjuration, Destruction, Alteration,

Illusion, Athletics, Sneak

Starting Health/Magicka/Fatigue: 60/360/145

Max Level: 49.5

Encumbrance: 150

Abilities:

- Resist Disease (constant: 75 pt. Self)

- Spell Absorption (constant: 50 pt. Self)

Drawbacks:

- Weakness to Fire, Frost, and Shock (constant: 25 pt. Self)

- Magicka regeneration disabled

Starting Stats:

INTELLIGENCE-55: Alchemy-10 Mysticism-35 Conjuration-30

WILLPOWER-45: Destruction-35 Alteration-35 Restoration-5

PERSONALITY-40: Illusion-30 Mercantile-10 Speechcraft-10

Pure mages are nice. I made one a long time ago based on my character in the Oblivion roleplaying competition. I don't know about the Stealth specialization... I guess having Intelligence and Willpower as favorite attributes will keep your magic strong enough.

But how are you going to do Dark Brotherhood quests? You can't really sneak towards your target and blow him away with a fireball without anyone noticing it. I guess that's no extra rewards for you sometimes

If you are on PC, maybe you want to use this mod? So you can form a background for your character. It's pretty nice.

I've haven't done the Dark Brotherhood quests yet. Are you saying there is no stealthy way for a mage to kill with magic?

That mod looks like an addition to the vanilla character creation that lets you change stats by answering questions? The description is a little vague. My characters do always have a unique background story and personality though.

I chose the stealth specialization to slow down her leveling a little and to boost sneak early on. I'm still playing with options: Here's the latest:

Name/Class: Malegra / Witch

Race/Gender: High Elf (Altmer) / Female

Birthsign: The Atronach

Specialization: Stealth

Attributes: Willpower, Endurance

Major Skills: Mysticism, Conjuration, Destruction, Alteration,

Illusion, Sneak, Acrobatics

Health/Magicka/Fatigue: 70/350/150

Max Level: 48.5

Encumbrance: 150

Stats:

INTELLIGENCE-50: Alchemy-10, Mysticism-35, Conjuration-30

WILLPOWER-45: Destruction-35, Alteration-35, Restoration-5

PERSONALITY-40: Illusion-30, Mercantile-10, Speechcraft-10

AGILITY-40: Security-10, Sneak-30, Marksman-10

SPEED-40: Athletics-5, Acrobatics-30, Light Armor-10

STRENGTH-30: Blunt-5, Blade-5, Hand to Hand-5

ENDURANCE-35: Block-5, Armorer-5, Heavy Armor-5

LUCK-50

In the mod the npc will ask you a few questions. Where did you come from? Then you can choose a background and it gives a boost to a few skills or attributes, but also lowers some of the others. Or it adds a weakness to disease, or resistance to fire. There are also a few scripted effects like an undead phobia, but since you will summon undead that wouldn't be smart.

No, I don't think so. You won't get a damage bonus either. There are some quests in which it doesn't matter whether you get detected, as long as you do this and that (like killing the person without anyone around) and sometimes you don't even kill them with attacking, but make it look like an accident. I don't know what happens if you have a high chameleon enchantement, sneak and cast a spell. I THINK they will detect you.

alchemy

restoration

mysticism

illusion

destruction

conjuration

hand to hand

It's great fun starting out with 350 magicka :)

Yeah. I look forward to trying some of the really powerful spells. My last character only knew some minor restoration and soul trap.

Here she is giving one of the Imperial guards a look on her first morning out of prison. If she looks angry, it's because she is angry.

Yeah. I just have to work out all the ways of recharging magicka now. Does anyone know if Welkynd stones respawn?

I think luck would have been better than willpower for a favorite attribute. Atronachs don’t benefit from willpower as much as other mages do.

Malegra is doing the Mage’s Guild recommendation quests now. She needs to get access to spellmaking and enchanting early. She will stop progressing with the MG then.

So far, the toughest opponents have been marauders with big swords and deranged zombies. She has low health and no armor. She has to keep those guys at a distance!

I don't know. If your character was a dark elf you could've summoned an ancestral ghost who you could attack. Can you summon anything that uses magic yet?

I think you could use a church altar, I remember trying to use one because I had a disease, but the spell was reflected because of one of my rings... So Spell Absorbtion should work too.

At the other hand, you're an evil witch and not someone who goes to chapels... Maybe you could use the chapel near the ayleid ruin Nenalata (sp?)? It has necromancers in it and has some corpses and bones... I wouldn't call the altar there holy.

Actually, any church, shrine or wayshrine will either be absorbed and turned into magicka or fully restore your magicka... either way: You get full magicka again :)
