davidlallen
I have been on the FNV modding forum here for about a month. I have been on other modding forum sites for a few years. Each of the games here has two modding forums, "talk" and "troubleshooting". The difference is not clear to me. At other forum sites, the division is more like "beginning modding" and "advanced modding". A large number of the new threads on both the FNV talk and FNV troubleshooting are repeats of the same beginner questions. I have asked the owner of the pinned FAQ on the FNV talk forum to add some updates, and he has helpfully done that. Is there supposed to be a difference in content between "talk" and "troubleshooting"? Is it possible to create an "advanced modding" subforum which will have a smaller traffic of better questions? EDIT: didn't realize I had exceeded the character count on the title, should be: "talk" and "troubleshooting" vs "beginning" and "advanced" Edited January 2, 2011 by davidlallen
TheCalliton
talk i sjust talking about it, and learningtroubleshooting is if there is a problem, like tech support so "talk" is just general not problem related"troubleshooting" is tech support, esentially
davidlallen
If I am modding, and I have a question, do I ask on talk or troubleshooting? If I am playing somebody else's mod, do I ask on talk or troubleshooting? In practice, it seems there is a 50/50 chance whether a question about modding will go on talk or troubleshooting. This means to read about modding, I have to follow both. Perhaps questions about modding should be in a third sub-forum.
TheCalliton
troubleshooting is for if a mod is not working properlyconsider it like calling tech supportand questions go into talk
davidlallen
You are not catching my point about what a modder wants, compared to what a player wants. A modder wants to know how to accomplish certain effects. Many of these are common questions, some of them aren't. Today modder questions go either to talk or troubleshooting, both of which seem wrong. There should be at least one subforum for modder questions, or maybe two, so advanced modders have less noise. TheCalliton
you are thinking about it too muchif you have a question relating some mod not working, go to troubleshootingotherwise just go to talk, "advanced" modders can just decide to not help out the new people
baduk
The way things are, intermingling the threads of mod development and people using mods is kind of interesting i guess.I know that this site mainly is focusing on getting the mods out to everyone.Probably most of the threads going on are about using mods and it may be beneficial some of the time to have mod developers around to make a comment on it. But i kind of get the feeling that more experienced modders get tired of following the section cause its a lot of the same questions over and over again.I think there should remain both a mod talk and troubleshooting forum for the majority of people who are using the mods. But i agree it would be good to have one more section called development. If you call it modding people will be confused cause some people refer to using mods as modding. Some of the mod development discussions are very precious i think, because it has a lot of educational value to enable people to make something new.Probably most people are like me and they get into making mods after being introduced to em as a user, and since they are introduced to mods here they can begin modding here also. I think there will be slower thread accumulation on a development sections so it will be easier for people to find the answers to the common questions and they wont need to be answered as often. Also interesting discussions or difficult questions may not end up falling really far back in the page list and dying.
