Fallout 3 Frame Rate = Speed of Character ?

I'm on my first play though of Fallout 3 (I'm an Oblivion vet) but i'm experiencing a curious quirk which may or may not be inherent to the game engine. This community , especially NMC has remade this game so I'm glad I waited to get the full community driven experience.

My problem is the speed of the character in fallout (at least in my case) seems to be dictated by the frame rate. I am using 3D vision which essentially doubles the performance requirements. Without it enabled I get 90 - 100 FPS. With 3D vision enabled my frame rate slows to about 50 FPS which is expected considering the extra bandwidth required. What is unexpected was that along with my frame rate my character movement speed is also cut in half. I have used 3D vision on a ton of games which leads me to believe this may be related to the Oblivion/ Fallout Engine.

So my question is , does fallout somehow inherently link the frame rate to the character speed ? At first I assumed I was going to slow but it could also be possible my character is just moving too fast at 100 FPS. Any command line ideas on how this could be remedied or is this likely a 3D vision specific problem.

Bullet Time is great when it's a feature ;)

So... what's your question, do you think the GAME runs slow or it's you character that's slow?

Try these commands:

setgs fmovebasespeed (default = 77) This adjusts the base rate that you and all NPCs move.

setgs fmoverunmult (default = 4) This affects how much faster running is than walking.

Running really fast can be dangerous to players and NPCs because running into objects gives damage and can be fatal. Players and NPCs can also ramp off objects and gain enough height to die when they land. If the value is a decimal, running speed will be slower than walking speed.

Yes.

You'll notice that normally Fallout 3 will cap the FPS at 60 even if you turn off vsync -- even if you force vsync off in your video driver. The only way to truly turn it off is to edit the ini and set iPresentInterval to 0. But, when you do that, everything in the game moves at a speed proportional to your frame rate. If you are getting 120fps, everything moves twice as fast as it should.

There really isn't a fix for this. You can use something like Fallout Stutter Remover to cap the framerates (no idea what that would do to your 3D Vision thing though) but it still causes issues with lip synching. It's just yet another way the GameBryo engine is a buggy piece of junk.

One of the worst problems with the Gamebryo engine is that it does indeed update everything in time with rendering a frame. If you get random lag while loading adjoining cells or fighting too many enemies at once (especially on less powerful hardware) the inconsistent input polling combined with moving at stuttering speeds can mean death more often than not.
