ell46
No offence intended to anyone, I'm just curious in case I'm missing out on something. I've noticed that when some mods are updated older versions of the files are still available for download, why is this?
Thandal
Just for completeness, Someone may have used that previous version (either alone, or in conjunction with another mod) that depends on elements that were removed in a later version. TheVampireDante
Can be one of three things: 1. The new, updated file still requires the previous file, and when installed just overwrites or adds to it. 2. Some people do not like the direction some mods go and prefer using an earlier version, some people leave those files up for that purpose. 3. Large scale mods - some of these depend on a certain version of a mod, and having a newer version will break that dependancy.
ell46
Thank you, there are some interesting points I hadn't considered, I think I need to be careful when downloading something that's been updated.
Quetzlsacatanango
I leave them up in case I screw something up, I will have a backup. I don't think there is a way of hiding specific files.
DarkeWolf
Another is incompatibilities. Sometimes a newer version of a mod may have incompatibilities that the new version caused that the older versions (sans the problematic update) doesn't have. Also, in case of bugs. Sometimes it's better for an author to say "Ok, download the version 3.x while I fix the problem in 4.x that is making the game crash when it loads". Good question tho Ell
DarkeWolf
Quetz- not a particular file, no :(When it comes to hiding files it hides the entire page only. You can remove individual files, but not hide them :(
ell46
I just notice sometimes there can be many older versions, which has always left me a bit confused and wondering why people don't do a bit of tidying up. On reading the descriptions there isn't always an obvious reason for wanting to download older files, so I've always gone for the latest version, it has never occurred to me that by removing an installed older version and then uploading a newer one I could be deleting files I might need for the new one, I just assumed the new version would have all the files needed to run the mod so no need to keep anything from a previous version, never considered a new version would be more like a patch for an older mod. So much software leaves a load of rubbish behind I don't like the idea of having bits of stuff left around doing nothing but cluttering up the HDD - see DarkWolf I haven't forgotten your lesson :D no more HD's for me. Thandal
... never considered a new version would be more like a patch for an older mod. While doing that is a REALLY poor programming practice, (and anymore most mod authors are better than that) the problem of newer versions introducing incompatibiliies with OTHER mods or players' exisiting game configurations is still there... I have to say for most mods I use the authors do seem to advise if there are or aren't conflicts, which is very helpful, I don't know if everyone does it.
