Immersive Horses (Horses that don't suck)

OK this actually should have been made first thing.

Riding is just no fun in Skyrim. If anything horses are somewhat useful for crazy shortcuts over mountains but thats not really actually fun either. (thats what you got fly mods for)

So here's what Id like to be made: Red Dead Redemption horses for Skyrim

Theres really no easier way to describe what I have in mind. Yeah these things are bugged out too but they are fun as heck. Riding owns in RDR and the horses look great. As good as the retextures are. It doesn't change the fact the body models for horses look ridiculous in skyrim. Horses arent bulky and their necks arent just as long as their legs either.

So yeah I am asking for a full Overhaul of horses:

==============================

1) Better body with fitting textures

2) Better riding mechnics so it feels like riding. the way RDR handles it is sweet: hit rapidly to increase speed, keep pressed to maintain speed, release to slow down, whatever other button you see fit to brake. Stamina use should be handled the same way aswell. It is used while you increase speed, maintaining speed even at top speed does not consume stamina. Of course the highest speed you can have by just keeping the button pressed should be slower than if you keep accelerating, again just like in RDR.

At the same time they shouldnt be able to turn the way they do. a wider curve radius should get the job done.

I guess the first 2 might require making a new skeleton for horses to get the bodyscale and the animation right

3) Horses running around sucks big time: if they wouldnt roam like wild hores unless attacked/scared would be great. <- this part could probably be incorporated into SkyTEST http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/10175/?

Someone could probably also place poles around the world where you can hitch your horse. (or maybe use existing clutter in the world that can be used for hitching)

On that accord I am not asking you to call them by whistling (I guess its doable with a shout or whatever) but I guess that is kinda lore breaking as this seems just so very western.

This is probably asking too much of just one modder but it would be a great, immersive, lore-friendly mod.

Just a little reminder how awesome riding can be

Have you tried out some of the horse manager mods out there yet? They might not look as slick as from the game you showed us but I do give a little bit more functionality and features than what vanilla has to offer.

the options convenient horses offers are p sweet.

to be perfectly honest most of the things I brought up before don't even matter as much to me. I really just want riding to be fun. The map is large enough to make riding an interesting way of travelling if youre not that big into fast travel/carriage or flying or whatever. I mean to be fair before I ever touched RDR I was ok with how horses work in Skyrim. Because I did tho Skyrim horses break my immersion regarding how unnatural it feels using them. While I find the look funny in the end I can deal with bulky horses and chalk that up to "well thats how they look in that world" the retextures help a great deal in making them pleasing to the eye.

I just thought I throw all my thoughts on horses out there. As I said in my first post I realize that this seems like a lot of work and as much as I appreciated better riding I'll be in no way upset if it doesnt seem worth the effort. Heck I am pretty sure I couldnt pull it off so I can't really contribute past pitching crazy ideas

Thanks for the response :D

Immersive Horses sounds pretty neat too from what I heard, although I can't test it out on my current playthrough what with my Convenient Horses scripts running already. :p It has more naturalistic take on the features Convenient Horses has, with different breeds of horses, the ability to name your horse, and trotting(!), and I heard its scripts are not as performance intensive as CH if you're concerned about that sort of thing. The only downside to it is that it currently doesn't have support for some follower managers other than Extensive Follower Framework (and perhaps FollowerLivePackage? Not sure atm!).

.

Whatever you choose, it'll still be better than vanilla. XD Have fun!

Interesting. The video looks kinda promising, Even though it doesnt really show how its cutting corners. I'll give it a try and report back on the riding. (I didn't even dare to ask for races lol)

Less scripts is definately a plus as my mod list is getting a bit on the heavy side as it is

Also I didn't realize theres a mod called immersive horses, so sorry at the author should he be reading this topic

============================================================

Thats a neat mod. thanks for the heads up. Ill make sure to endorse the author

Let's pretend I wanted to advertise the mod hence I actually titled the thread "Immersive Horses"

Not how it happened but I am a happier horse owner in Skyrim now so it was well worth it.

As far as I can tell from playing around with the mod for like 15 minutes the riding is really improved over vanilla. I dont ride into things all the time

Thanks

Oh, I forgot to add one other little thing. Riding Skyrim's horses forces you to ride in third person, which can be annoying for some people who wanted to see what is directly in front of them when they are riding. One thing that can fix this is a mod like Enhanced Camera, that let's you choose which POV you want to experience horse riding with. :)

never really bothered me but ive been wondering how they guy in the vid managed POV riding

upon closer inspection the ai is still kinda screwy. horses i tell to wait still have that urge to go back to their home stable. I am not sure but it might be related to the fact that I had a second horse following (in theory I didnt actually see it either)

Well its way too late to figure that out, I'm gonna indulge in more horse testing tomorrow

thanks again for the help :D

Id like to add that I just discovered this little beauty: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/36701/?

yeah sorry for not looking harder myself before. Immersive horses + whistle makes for a mighty improvement over vanilla horses
