timed minigame to disarm?

There are countless scenes in movies where the hero discovers a ticking time bomb and must do something, like cut a wire, to disarm it before it counts down to zero. I would like to do something similar. When the player discovers a certain item, I'd like to pop a message (ideally) or some other effect, which counts down in real time and offers one of several choices. Based on skill (explosives probably, or repair) there are more or fewer buttons to choose -- with low skill there may be a number of buttons, with high skill fewer. Each button has a pattern, some of which are right or wrong. It would be similar to a hacking minigame, but (a) timed, and (b) one try only.

 

Has anybody seen something similar, or can anybody suggest ways I can accomplish parts of this?

OK, as I start to ask questions which nobody knows the answer to, I guess I am graduating from "intermediate" to "advanced" modder.

 

What I wound up with, is slightly different than what I originally proposed; but it seems to work. I have put an ondeath timer on the NPCs so that they self destruct after 10 seconds. If the player reaches the body before that, they can "activate" to loot, but they get a message box. The message box currently allows them to disable the self destruct based on skill level. I will try a variation which gives a *percent chance* to disarm, meaning if you have a high skill you are 90% likely to disarm and 10% likely to be right next to a grenade explosion instead. I will have to tune that, but it will put some real risk into looting this type of NPC.
