Compressed .dds textures for the HUD

Okay, so basically I was considering reskinning the HUD, because... I dunno. That's not terribly important though.

 

Trying to use a texture that's already in the game works, of course (using the fatigue bar texture for the health bar or whatever). I tried opening that in GIMP and resaving it without making any other changes to it. When I saved it without compression, it displayed properly in-game. With any of the other compression settings, it would just show up as something like this:

This is, of course, not how the health bar is supposed to look...

 

Of course, I could get around this by saving everything uncompressed, but that will result in larger filesizes and such, and it's probably best to learn what I'm doing wrong so I can do it right, you know?

 

So... my question is: what do I have to do to properly export compressed .dds files from GIMP so that they can display in-game?
