crash after patch

I've searched for this problem, exuse me if I missed the thread. I have been playing Oblivion iv for a few months W/O the patch . Now to level 10, yea I know , not very far but not a lot of gaming time either. Last night I installed the English patch , I had to restart the game a few time before it would run , the splash screens run (I usually ESC to the game) , now today, it wont run , just the splash screens, and the ESC key has no effect. The intro music plays but the game minimizes to the tasks bar. When I click on it , this is when I get the dredded (must exit).

I totally uninstalled the game (saving the saves),re-installed. This was to no evail, same outcome! Looked for the patch and made sure it was uninstalled as well.

MSI K7-6570

AMD 3200+ ~ 2300 roughly

1.5 gigs 3200 DDR (Spektek) running dual channel

ATI 9800 pro 128

All drivers are updated,Defrag regularly, on and on , don't know what else to say!

Any help would be great.

"English patch..?"

Do you mean the patch for the U.K. version of the game..? Or just the North American patch..?

Make sure you install the patch that was intended for whichever version of the game you own. I'm only guessing, but this sounds like you might have a compatibility issue...

If you own the North American (USA) version, then you need:

http://static.bethsoft.com/Oblivion_v1.1FinalEnglish.exe

If you own the U.K./Australian version, then you need:

http://static.bethsoft.com/Oblivion_v1.1UKEnglish.exe

For either version, take note of this warning from Bethesda:

This patch is NOT compatible with copies purchased via direct2drive or localized versions of Oblivion.

I'd first check to make sure that you have the correct patch, before tearing anything else apart. :)

I sometimes lose myself in translation, yes , the USA patch. I purchased the game disk from Best ***.

The crazy thing is Last night after hours of cleaning, primping, nothing! Untill I re-installed the Xp-ATI drivers. Then she started up and ran past midnight! Now , Nothing........................

How will I insure the 1.1 patch is not installed? I have deleted it , and re-installed the game. Reson being , the game had no real problems untill the patch. BTW, I would have been much further in the game, but this is not the first time this has happend!(silly me did'nt copy the saves * sighs pitifully *) The last time, to get the game running again, I had to do a complete HDD reformat, partition ect.

Make sure you have a new, clean installation of the game.

Then, make sure you patch it with the correct patch from Bethesda. If you don't, a lot of mods won't work (assuming that you use any mods).

There are a few known issues between Oblivion and ATI drivers. Check out TweakGuides.com for some info.

Make sure your video driver is set so that Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering are both "Application Controlled" and not forced.

If you continue to have troubles, then the problem is elsewhere in your system and likely has nothing to do with Oblivion. A good thing to check for is overheating.... Oblivion is a game that pushes most computers to their limits. A failing or inadequate power supply is also a likely culprit.

Be sure you haven't overclocked anything in your computer... especially the CPU and video card. Oblivion hates overclocked systems and it crashes regularly if you try to force it to run on such a machine. This has been documented and verified. If you have a good computer, then you don't need to overclock it in the first place. Overclocking is for slow machines that can't keep up with the big boys. ;)

Good luck. :)
