Demon_Fire_9842
Current specs: CPU:AMD Athlon 3700+GPU:2x ASUS 7900GS running in SLiRAM: 2GB Corsair High-SpeedMotherboard: ASUS A8N-SLI DeluxeNothing Overclocked It slows down a little in some urban places like the Anvil docks or the main gate of Chorrol, but not so bad that it really matters. However, whenever I'm in combat, it starts to stutter really bad. I dropped my AA down to 2xQ from 8xS(although I don't think it matters because I use HDR) and my AF from 8x to 2x, and I can get FPS in the high 20's outside. I tried this because I noticed that I was getting FPS up to 80 inside, and thought dropping the AF might be effective as there's a lot more texture outside. So now it runs well normally outside, but during combat it slows down really badly. After dropping my AA and AF, I noticed that my FPS still seemed to stay in the high 20's during combat, even though it was running really slow. I thought that it might be a problem with something else then. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :) Here's my DXDiag results: ------------------System Information------------------Time of this report: 11/22/2006, 00:59:10 Machine name: MATT Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519) Language: English (Regional Setting: English)System Manufacturer: System manufacturer System Model: System Product Name BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG Processor: AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3700+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.3GHz Memory: 2048MB RAM Page File: 260MB used, 3680MB available Windows Dir: C:\WINDOWS DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)DX Setup Parameters: Not found DxDiag Version: 5.03.2600.2180 32bit Unicode ------------DxDiag Notes------------ DirectX Files Tab: No problems found. Guest Tessera
Stuttering generally occurs in Oblivion when the game engine is trying to load up the scenery as you run around outside. Every once in awhile, you reach a place where the game is not only waiting for the data to load, but it's also trying to calculate some other variables at the same time... such as local NPC's, enemies and other data that has appeared in the given area. In other words, it stutters when it becomes so busy that the data isn't loading fast enough to suit the changes that are being calculated for that particular localized area. As you can imagine, there are literally hundreds of different things that can cause the engine to become overloaded. If you could hear the game engine talking when the stuttering occurs, it might go something like this: "Are there bandits nearby that you can't see..? Maybe... but will they sense our presence..? Maybe. What will their disposition be if they do..? Who knows... I need to calculate. What color is the grass up ahead and how tall is it... hang on, calculating... shadows incoming... oh and by the way, I'm still waiting for that graphic of the elm tree back there to load, so like.... ummm... ummm... ummm... umm... etc." Your computer seems fine for Oblivion, so I'll just give the usual suggestion: read the following article regarding tweaks to your Oblivion ini file: http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_1.html The stuttering issue is addressed in that excellent article, as are many other wonderful tweaks. Another factor related to stuttering has to do with hard drive thrashing on single-drive systems. Check out what I had to say about that problem here: http://forum.gamingsource.net/index.php?s=...st&p=188030 Between various file tweaks and running a much more efficient hard disk array, I've pretty much removed stuttering from Oblivion altogether on my system... so it can definitely be eliminated or at least minimized. Demon_Fire_9842
Thanks for the info. The hard drives are a good idea. I've already tweaked out my ini and such, as well as my forceware. It could be the hard drive, but I don't think it's simply land area data, as I'm running fine, right up until an enemy attacking me comes near. Then it starts stuttering, even though I'm not really moving, and keeps stuttering until the fight is over. As well, it slows down especially when I or an enemy swing our weapons. Could it be a problem relating to combat data being processed? It used to run perfectly fine even during combat even with my AF up at 8x, but now I need to put it at 2x just to move around smoothly normally, and combat stutters no matter what. All I can think of that's really changed is that I had to physically reset my BIOS, but I upgraded it to the most recent driver again, so it should be fine. Do you have any idea what it could be? Thanks again.
Guest Tessera
A few things... (1) Don't overclock anything. Oblivion gets along poorly with overclocked hardware. (2) In the Forceware, change AF, AA and Vert. Sync to "Application Controlled." Oblivion doesn't really need AF, anyway... it looks pretty enough as it is and forced AF can contribute to stuttering issues. (3) You say that it gets particularly bad when enemies are nearby. This fits into what I said in my previous post... that the engine is chugging along, trying to calculate NPC data, when at the same time it's thrashing away at the graphics. Try to strike a happy medium between the two. If it's any consolation, Oblivion is a game that has such high demands, that even the most uber home computer on this planet still can't run it all at full-blast... not without having some performance issues. On the brighter side, I don't think this game will become obsolete anytime soon... it's waaaaay ahead of the pack, in terms of sheer gorgeous-ness. Now we just gotta wait for the hardware industry to catch up. :)
Kovzac
Geforce + HDR + AA = Bethesda says "Nope", ... sadly. If you can afford it, consider trying "Diskeeper" defragger, made by the guys that did Windows own built in, but now severly updated and with automatic defrag 24/7 that make zero performance hit. After using that and mildly modding the .ini settings Oblivion doesnt lag for me anymore. :) 8)
