How to Modify the Armor NPCs wear (NCR trooper)?

Hi All

 

I've installed the NCR Uniform Mod that modifies the looks of all the NCR trooper armor and helmet, so in game all the NCR NPC soldiers now have a new look.

 

However, I'm not quite happy with the look of the new helmet, and thought I'll attempt my own modifying.

 

I thought i'll start simple by just substitute the mod's NCR helmet NIF file (along with mesh & texture) with, say, those of the 'Combat Helmet' extracted from the game's BSA file.

 

Will it work if I rename the NIF file of the Combat Helmet to match those of the NCR Helmet (hence over-writing it), so that the NCR Uniform Mod's ESP file will still read and apply it automatically in game to all NCR npc troopers?

 

I'm only into the basics of modding and just want to start with simple stuff. Any comments would be appreciated! Thanks.
