How to install mods without crashing to desktop?

Hi, I'm trying to install mods for Xcom: Enemy unknown and it's crashing to desktop upon startup.

Steps I took:

1. Load mods into mods folder of "XCOM UPK Patcher."

2. Open UPK Patcher and set install location to "E:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\XCom-Enemy-Unknown."

3. Load up mods one at a time and press "Apply."

4. All mods say "successfully patched!"

Open up XCOM EU.

Chose EU, not EW.

Boots up... and then crashes to desktop with error message.

What am I doing wrong here?

When you say "UPK Patcher", are you meaning "PatcherGUI" or the command line tool part of the "UPK Utils" toolset? Those are the only currently supported "general mod installation" tools. Others specifically mentioned on a mod's download page may be obsolete unless the page has been updated in the last year, but the "UPK Utils" tools will work with most. Be sure you have the latest version. That produces a log file where you installed it which should let you confirm there actually were no errors. Post it in the "UPK Utils" thread (in spoiler tags, please) if necessary.

Have you tested EU (twice) to the main menu prior to installing any mods (as per the "Basic Guide" wiki article)?

Have you disabled the "phone home" feature ("Basic Guide" wiki article)?

Are you running with Steam in "off-line" mode ("Basic Guide" wiki article)?

Have you disabled "Hash checks" ("Basic Guide" wiki article)?

Have you "Enabled INI loading" ("Basic Guide" wiki article)?

Have you installed TexMod? If so, you need to uninstall it, install all other mods first, and then install TexMod last (because it requires renaming the game executable and messes up other mod installations).

Try installing only one mod at a time, test it, and report with details on what is installed and the nature of any error messages the system gives. See the wiki article "Troubleshooting basics".

Mods for EU are specific to "patch level", which should be indicated on the download page. In general, they will require you "downgrade" EU to "patch level 4" for EU specific mods to work. Mods for "Enemy Within" (EW) are not normally compatible unless they specifically say so.
