t0mm06
well actually i got till dragon age 2 comes out :D hi didnt really know where else to ask, as i've moved to a new city for university and i havent found a new tech guy yet,So my laptop was running games perfectly less then a week ago, its a studio dell with a high end graphics/video card (can be arsed to find the exact one unless its really vital), 500 gb on the hard drive and 4gb of ram, last week it was running dragon age and all my other games perfectly, this week i've been having really bad lag problems, i thought it might be as i overloaded it with MODs but i have deleted them all, uninstalled all the DLC and everything and it still lags, then i unistalled Dragon age, and tried assassins creed (had it in my steam library) and thats laggin just as bad when it ran perfectly when i played it last (just b4 chirtsmas) i've got no idea what it could be, so i came here for help (to be honest i just need it to be back to working order for when Dragon age 2 comes out! thanks in advance people. p.s i know everyone likes to point the finger at laptops or say how high is the specs, i know a fair amount about computers (am a computer animator... in training) it runs the 3d softwear fine, all the adobe suit fine, its just as soon as a game is on its started being s***, and i know that this isnt a 'your specs arnt high enough problem. cib01
Could be spyware or a virus thats causing the issue, try scanning for each and make sure you laptop is clean of these, or it may be some new software that you have installed thats using up too much of your systems resources in the background. DarkeWolf
Heyas T0mm :)The first thing to do when you have a problem with the computers is to ask "What has changed since the symptoms started?"So yeah... what's changed?have you changed any system settings, installed any new software, hooked up any new hardware, stuff like that?Have you changed the power settings at all? Those definitely affect how well a lappy runs, because they downgrade the output of the hardware in order to conserve heat and battery power. As for hardware.... 4 gigs of ram for DA really isn't enough sometimes. It has a memory leak in the game engine and after time will lag out and start crashing because it will just keep eating ram till it dies. It might be a case of one of your ram modules going bad, in which case you really need to check into it, because bad ram modules can cause the system to periodically shut off by itself. My advice is to take it to one of the university's technicians. Most schools have at least one computer technician on the payroll. Have them take a look at it, cuz sometimes it's a lot easier to make a diagnosis when the machine is right there in your hands, than it is on a machine that you dont know anything about, and cant check into. Definitely wish you good luck, if you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask! :)

t0mm06
Also i haven't added any new hardware, or changed anything since i got it back working (about 2-3 weeks before anything went wrong with the laggin)also like i said 4GB of RAM was plenty not two weeks ago and has been since i got it in October, i have been running it on the highest settings (and i have tried lowering them and that changes nothing)Also its not just dragon age, its all of my games even the ones that need next to nothing to play on (fable 1, command an conquer ect) even lego star wars! Also all of my RAM modules are fine
naomis8329
As DarkeWolf suggested take the laptop to your techy, each computer department has one and considering the course you're doing you should have one attached to your department. They are pretty sound (at least the one's I've met are) and are a fount of knowledge and resources. Have a chat and I'm sure he/she can sort it out.. Sometimes things can get "in" that are undetectable by usual means someone with the knowledge and know how will find it if that is the case. Don't give up as all is not lost. Use the resources on hand and ask for help. Let us know if your techy sorted it.... Stay safe Naomi
