texture troubles

I just recently started using blender(10 hours ago) on my pursuit of modeling a new weapon. All I'm really doing is swapping out the cylinder,bullets, re-loader, etc. from the 44 magnum with a new version i made myself for energy weaponry. The real problem in this is that the old textures no longer work. in addition i can't get the uv layout to work in a favorable manor. When i make one off of my model, things overlap and its nare impossible to see which piece is which. Additionally, when i save the layout and try to load it in paint.net it's just a white sheet. any help on this one? a more weapon specialized Texture walkthrough might even do the trick, I'd look myself but i'm getting to tired today. help is appreciated.
