The program typically used to viw/trivially modify .NIFs is NIFSkope. For .DDS, GIMP or Photoshop, in addition to the appropriate .DDS plugin for each, are used. As simply REMOVING the association appears to require modification of the registry, I'll explain how to set the association for each to the corresponding program.

First, determine the path Gimp is installed at, and the path for NIFSkope.

--Find a .DDS file.

--Right-click on it, and select Properties.

--Next to the Opens With entry, there is a Change... button. Click it.

--If Gimp-x.x (whatever your current version is) is listed under Recommended Programs or Other Programs, select it. If not, click Browse, and navigate to the folder it is installed in, and select it.

--Repeat the above, substituting .NIF for .DDS, and NIFSkope for Gimp/gimp-x.x

Hi guys, i think i can help with that although i have to make some guesses for the correct button labels, 'cause i use a german version of Win XP...

First open "My Computer" or any other folder

Then on top go to "Extras" (last one before "Help")

There should be an option called "Folder Options" (The last one)

In that window you go to the third Tab, called "File Types" or something

It will give you a list of all known file types with their extensions, you scroll down to the DDS entry.

Lower hand should be a change button left to the "Open with..." entry.

Click that, select your favorite program and you've done the trick.

That should work without messing with the registry. :)
