Mod Melee Weapons to Use Ammo?

Any experienced modders who can help on this, would be appreciated.

 

I am working on a mod that included a unique Melee weapon. Since it's pretty OP, I want it to use the Alien Cell type ammo so that it isn't over-used. I set the ammo type, and ammo amount, etc, it the GECK, but it doesn't consume ammo when used. :| Even tried changing the weapon type to small arms.

 

I suppose I could make a script effect to check for ammo, remove it, etc... but if there's a way for the game to do this like it would for a firearm, that would probably mean less chances for problems/errors. Anyone have any ideas?
