ell46
Sorry to be so dim, can someone explain in simple terms what DRM for DA2 is all about? I've just been reading loads of posts about it on BW and I'm not sure if I understand it or not, there were odd moments I thought the light went on then I read something else and it went off again
brokenergy
People are panicking because it's basically the same as Origins and Steam combined to form DA2. If you know Steam then you know that you need to log in form time to time but there is an off-line mode. You do not need dick-check (yay for me, I hate scratching my disks) but you do need to verify it (like how you usually get your DLC and upload characters) from time to time (no of days unknown). You can install on infinity computers, at infinity times but it can only work on 5 in any given 24 hour period (usual procedure of any given license). You don't need to be online 24-7 and it will take a small take of your time (less than a min). Also, like all BioWare products, there is a 'sunset' plan to remove these features. If you have any issues with this, discuss with EA and BioWare reps.
ell46
Sorry that sounds like what I've been reading and it went right over my head. Any chance of explaining it clutter free and in laymans terms?
ell46
Sorry to post again, but you might be replying to the above and miss this if I use edit. All I want to do is register my game play it for as long as I want to, download DLC, patches and mods as available and whatever free stuff comes with it, then when I get bored not play for who knows how long maybe a year or so and then start playing again without loosing DLC I've bought or the whole game. I don't give a monkeys about uploading characters and trophies and all that online profile stuff.
ElliotKane
Easy version: 1. If you buy it on Steam, it will run with Steam DRM only. So if you get it from Steam, forget the rest of this post. 2. If you get it anywhere else, you will have to register the game with EA in order to play it at all. This will be required when you first install. If you do not have a Bioware account, you will have to create one. 3. Non-Steam versions will also contact EA's servers every few days (The exact interval has yet to be disclosed). If for some reason it cannot contact the servers, your game will stop working. 4. If you have a disk, you will not need to keep the disk in the drive to play the game. 5. If you try to play the game on more than 5 machines in a 24 hour period, it will not let you play the game. This would seem to imply that the game will contact EA's servers every time you start it up, BUT this is not confirmed and the implication may be the result of very poor wording by Bioware. *** If you read that and think 'no thanks, Bioware' then you are not alone. EDIT: Worth remembering also that none of the DLC from DA1 was available on Steam, so anyone wanting DLC may end up having to deal with BOTH types of DRM, even if they buy the main game from Steam. Again, this is possible, not certain. Edited February 2, 2011 by ElliotKane
ell46
Flippin eck, what is wrong with these people, why can't we just buy the damned game register it and have done with all this nonsense are they paranoid or what. :verymad: I've got it pre-ordered, but if it stops running because of EA or anyone else too often then as good as the games are I won't be buying them again, I'd rather give up gaming or just play all my old ones. It's bad enough Win7 keeps butting in every time I try and do anything I'd like to burn down MS for that load of * might be in future I want to burn down BW and EA as well. I hope their servers go up in smoke. sorry I should have also said thank you for explaining that so well  Edited February 2, 2011 by ell46
Thandal
My understanding is that Number 3, above, is not true. Once "authorized" ("activated", "registered", choose your term) you do not have to connect again, EVER, to play. IF you want to obtain DLC, install again, (on same or different computer) or otherwise obtain/allow a connection to the EA servers after an, (as ElliotKane said "as yet unspecified") period of not communicating with them, the DRM will again attempt to "verify your authorization". And as BKE said earlier, there is an expectation of a "sunset" provision to remove even these modest requirements at some point. As far as the vast majority of players with a) a legitimate copy of the the game, and b) a broadband connection to the interwebz, are concerned, this is a total non-issue. Buy it. Install it. Play it!

I don't give a monkeys about uploading characters and trophies and all that online profile stuff. You do know that you actually update your profile every-time you go to DA and it goes on-line, right? I assume that the number of days is between 30-90 days (not hard is it? ) with a quick log-in. It's like how you usually log-in in Origins and ME2. It would be around for a few years before being patched out. It's like Steam, people love that (it usually goes on-line before being switched off-line) but when suddenly BioWare goes well lets do it like Steam people go nuts? This isn't SecuROM, you won't get any hidden software installed.
