Smooth613
[...]If you start up the game immediately after it crashes, and it runs OK for about ten minutes, I seriously doubt this is an overheating issue, because there wouldn't be time for anything to cool down significantly during the few seconds it takes to restart Oblivion. [...]I'd just like to comment on the above. If you've ever used any hardware monitoring software you would see that hardware cools down very fast, within seconds, when not in use. So yes it's still conceivable to think it's an overheating problem. Fire up your favorite hardware monitoring software, then a game, and look at the temperatures in game. Lets just say for example, your GPU is at 70* C while the game is running, and immediately before you exit. Now as soon as you exit watch the temperature fall, rapidly. By the time you've hit the desktop you're likely down to 60* C and within another few seconds you'll be back to your idle temperature, mine is around 45* C. reaper9111
@FatalmasterpieceI just did a clean stock install, this is what i was trying to explain in my last post ...Still happenning ! @ FerrytNo when i did the clean new stock install i was trying to create a new game, still crashing within the char gen !It wasn\t a problem in the past, because i was carefully choosing / and checking in CS and cleanning each mod that was going in m y data !Tte load order has been fix, well even if i now i'm only trying to start a new clean no mod install game !If it would be about over heat, why doe this never make my pc crash "outside" the game ! ONLY IN THE GAME ! Reaper
bben46
Oblivion is a resource hog. It will work your video card and CPU harder than just about anything short of a reliability testing program. And working that hard, it gets hotter than anything else you might do also. One way to test is to reduce your video setting to the lowest you can work with and try it - if the game plays longer, it's probably heat related. And that could mean dust in the fans or air channels. Cleaning your computerhttp://www.tesnexus.com/articles/article.php?id=304 Have you checked the other things I suggested? Don't think that just because some background process doesn't cause problems when not playing the game that it won't crash Oblivion. One of the earliest I found was a HP printer program that wanted to check for updates every ten minutes (sound familiar?) When it wasn't able to get through because the site it wanted to go to was no longer valid, it would try again in ten minutes. Every time it tried to connect, it stole enough CPU clock cycles to confuse the game engine enough that it gave up - and crashed. Even when the computer was not connected to the internet it was constantly trying to connect - and crashing Oblivion - An updated printer driver didn't fix it. I had to uninstall everything that the original HP installation CD had installed, and reinstall the printer using the drivers from the HP site. Then my Oblivion problem went away. ANY background program that takes enough attention away from the game can cause a crash.
Telyn
Things to try: 1. First thing is to disable any programs when playing that you don't absolutely need. The Bethesda site already advises players to do this, including antivirus and antispyware software. Some sites will tell you to disable your firewall, but I do not recommend that. Oblivion is a very demanding game. The less you have running in the background, the less chance you will overload your system.2. Second thing to try is go into options in Oblivion and lower your graphics settings. If it doesn't help, you can put them back how they were. Lower settings = less stress on your system. If lowering the settings helps, you can at least play while you try to figure out what else may be going on that is causing the problem.3. Run a diagnostic on your system using the Windows troubleshooting tools. Also defragment your hard drive. One of the Bethesda support FAQs auggests defragmenting, so don't skip this step. This must be a really frustrating situation. The big question here is why was it working before and not now? What has changed? Let's figure out whether anything you've done outside the game could be causing crashes in the game. Do try using hardware monitoring software as has been suggested, but here are a few other possibilities and suggestions for you that apply to troubleshooting game crashes in general: 1. Have you installed any Windows updates around the time this started? It's important to keep updated, but it's not at all uncommon for something to go wrong during a Windows update, especially in Vista and Windows 7 if you had programs open. 2. Have you made any changes to your system around the time this started? New software, changes to graphics settings? Probably this won't help, but whenever you have a stable system and something suddenly goes wrong, the first question to ask yourself is what you changed, if anything, right before that. For example, if you updated a program you use which is "always on" the new version could be causing your PC to overheat when it didn't before. It could be anything from printer software to Skype. You don't have to post what other programs you are running here, but make a list for yourself of everything you have changed outside the game around the time this started. 3. Does your computer have a "Turbo Mode?" It is a known issue that turbo mode can cause this problem for some people when gaming. I've seen a lot posts from Asus users in particular on another game forum. If you Google on it you'll see many posts from people using Turbo mode who develop crashes in games only, sometimes just one particular game. Symptoms are frequent crashing at a pretty predictable interval caused by overheating. You might try disabling it temporarily.4. Is your computer noiser than usual when you play, and/or hotter to the touch? If it's a laptop you can usually tell if it's overheating just by feeling it.5. Do you have the latest drivers for your video and audio? If not, download them. If you do and you updated them recently, consider rolling them back to the old versions to see if that helps. Good luck! I hope you can discover the cause of this sudden problem, and resolve it soon. It is completely possible the crashing of Oblivion is caused by something on your system unrelated to Oblivion. I know it doesn't feel instinctively likely, but Oblivion is a program that pushes your system. Something outside the game may be the "last straw" that causes Oblivion to crash. reaper9111
@ bben46Yes my friend i\ve read trought what you pointed, but (that i know of) nothing seems to be related to me... (i must say that i'm no beginner in OB's mod/modding, so i carefully choose what i'm doing....And i have to say that i don;t think i have anything trying to connect to the net, but is there a specific way to check that ?(i mean, i have no printer, i have a weather "desk interface" to quicly check the weather, i have frostwire (Off) if i don't need it !) i mean, where would i be able to check if there would be something else trying to connect somewhere to get something ! ???Many Thanks for your help Bben ! @ Telyn-Ok, how do i do that (disable any un-needed programs) ?-I will try lowering my settings... (they'r on max plus some .ini settings for maximize the game, but i have to say that this was done with the CS Wiki or OB's WIKI >INI setting recommandation, Nothing that i did myself as a "test what it does" !!!)-Defragment is not an issue, it set up to do it itself everyweek !-I dont have turbo ! Not that i know of ! (Dual core dos'nt mean Turbo, right !) So No i don't have such thing !-I have the latest Driver, no worry ! downloaded them all yesterday before posting !-Its not noisier then usual, hotter, i don;t know, i rarely touch my pc (it's not a laptop) btw !- Thank you very much for the precious info !i'll get back to you ... Thanks guys, i'll get back to you !Reaper
reaper9111
GUYS, THANK YOU VERU MUCH FOR ALL THE PRECIOUS HELP !!! Overheating was indeed my issue, but the reason will make me look really dumb, (like i said in my previous post, "i rarely touch my pc", well, this include the fact that i don't clean my fan very often !So hee... yeah ! Let's stop here ! THANKS !Reaper
Telyn
Glad you fixed it! Yes, it can be hard to remember to check your fans. It's amazing how much dust and junk gets in there, especially if you have a pet.
