Beginner Mod Help

Hello all. First post here and trying to get into modding. So I do see the pinned posts but they are pretty old (2011) and the links don't work either. What i'm looking for is if anyone knows a fairly current guide on how to get started modding. Like really from the beginning though. Yesterday i took my first step towards modding and had some success. But the end result didn't work out great. I really am not sure how to use LOOT or TES4Edit or if these are even good ways of doing things anymore. Basically this is what I followed:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDYpjQBQHGA

I don't expect anyone to watch all his videos but this guy has quite a few videos that are very helpful and this is actually fairly current but still not current enough as some of the links he has aren't the same anymore. For instance For the Unofficial Patch, Shivisles and DLC Patch's he uses the EXE DL's. But they don't seem to be on Nexus anymore so I DL'D the Manual and just activated them in OBMM. LOL idk if that makes sense but I didn't know what else to do. So then I did have some success. I did get "Keychain", "Character Creation Overhaul" and "DaNifIed UI" to work. Then I tried going with Qarl, Window lighting and some others and I was really getting nowhere. I didn't kill the game but I just don't know what i'm doing. I'm not computer illiterate either. But from the video's i'm watching from this guy Xuul, while he's been very helpful I think he leave's some things out. I really have no idea how to use LOOT or TES4Edit. After I activate in OBMM then what do I do?

Now this guy has a different method but it's from 2011 and a lot of stuff just doesn't seem the same.

I'm not asking anyone to hold my hand "unless you want to" but is there a good tutorial out there that is basically fool proof and fairly current?

Thanks in advance. add me on steam if it's easier

Is there something preventing you from using Nexus Mod Manager? Many mods, like Illumination Within and the unofficial patches can be installed using NMM. Further, OBMM comes with tutorials and such under the help button. It seems that the tutorials you've been looking at, however useful, often show how to install mods "the hard way."

Well I know for sure I like Darnified UI and as far as everything I read you cannot use that with NMM. I've read that NMM can have problems with some older mods. I am a newbie though. I actually started getting it. After messing up so much things are starting to work. I'm learning. I guess I am doing it the hard way though. I'm only using OBMM, LOOT and TES4Edit. Wrye Bash was confusing me. I feel like it does the same thing as OBMM. But like I said i'm so newb right now. I would like to try using NMM. Is it wise to use NMM and for stuff that won't work with it use OBMM?

Okay. I'll try to summarize what I know/think I know as best as I can:

LOOT: Don't know anything about it, so I can't offer any advice there.

TES4Edit: I've only ever used it for mod cleaning, so I'm ignorant of anything else it can do. I don't know that you can use it to install mods.

Wrye Bash: Yeah, it has a bit of a steep learning curve. I'm not great with it myself.

OBMM: While it is true that some mods like Darnified UI need OBMM to install it correctly, only some mods (generally called o-mods) require it. If the mod does not specifically mention needing OBMM to work, then you can probably don't need to use OBMM at all. I don't know how OBMM handles mods that don't require its use, as any stuff I install that doesn't need OBMM I install by other means. OBMM, however, comes with a lot of extra utilities that are worth having around.

NMM: Some would disagree with me, but I heavily recommend using NMM, especially for a beginner. I have heard that it doesn't play well with some older mods, but I've never encountered this problem myself. I recommend it for the following reasons: most mods can be installed with it, it has an easier learning curve, it simplifies mod installation, and it helps keep your mods organized, so that you can always tell what you are running and what you aren't. Anecdotally, I've noticed that many OBSE-dependent mods do not work well with NMM, and have more rigorous installation processes with very specific instructions on how to do so (hence the lengthy processes seen in the videos you linked to). A general trend I have noticed is that if the mod page does not explicitly require an alternative installation program, does not supply very specific installation instructions, and offers a way to download with NMM, then the mod can probably be installed using NMM. Hope this helps. Happy modding.

Now I await the firestorm of modders who will inevitably disagree with me. :geek:

NMM is the easiest to use. I don't use it on Oblivion though, had issues with it in the past. I stick to OBMM now for Oblivion. Probably have to go hunting for a good tutorial on how to use it but it's not that hard, just a little time consuming to do it till you figure it out. Don't forget to use the archive invalidation feature, it's under utilities button I think. You'll have to learn how to use it if you want Darnified. And you do.

LOOT is just a simple double click to launch. Select the game you want to set load order for and then click to sort it. Accept. And your done. Your load order has now been properly set up.

The only real hair puller I use is Wrye Bash. Took a while to figure that one out. It's a massive readme but it's massive because it spells it ALL out in great detail how to use the tool. It's a great piece of Oblivion happiness. It can take a slew of mods and duct tape them together to work with each other with it's bashed patch feature. I had crash problems back in the day before I found out about it and learned it. This is the one that will frustrate you but if you run a lot of mods or even a few that make sweeping changes, you have to learn this too. Best bet is to keep the readme/manual open on one monitor and the tool on another so you can step by step go through it all. It even has screenshots and detailed explinations of absolutely everything for absolutely every tab on the too. You'll struggle the first few times with it but once you get it, it's fast and easy. It's a mandatory one.

TES4EDIT I rarely use. Have off and on to clean mods but mostly I just don't worry about it. I don't seem to have problems and I usually have around 200 mods running.

Learn OBMM.

Learn WryeBash

LOOT is just a double click and then like two or three clicks after that. Nothing to it.

Install with OBMM

Sort with LOOT

Patch with WryBash's Merged Patch feature

Yer done.

Oh, and when you get to Wrye in the process it'll ask you if you want to disable load order lock times or something like that. You do. You want that off. I think it will wreak havok with what LOOT is doing if you don't. You may want to run LOOT one more time when you are all done just to make sure the mods are in the correct order.

Good luck.
