eggbart
I'm fairly new to modding and most of the mods I've made have been purely trial and error. I created a few weapons with simple retextures but I thought it would be interesting to take it a step further. I wanted to combine a few meshes (In this case, a rake, fission battery, and a wire) into a single mesh. Opened the models in NifSkope, brought them over to one window, adjusted them to correct sizes and angles and saved it as a .nif. But the snag is when I open the .nif of my electric rake in the GECK, I just get the big red box. I assume this is because I don't have a proper texture to go with it. If not that, I made an error while creating the mesh. Could somebody help me out on what to do next? Should I start from scratch? If you could like me to a tutorial as well that would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I'm aware, to make a brand new mesh you'll need to import the individual meshes into blender, then join them, make a new collision box for them, then export the whole thing. It's very quick and easy to do IF you know blender. What you'll need is:Blender: A free, powerful 3d modelling program. For what you're suggesting you won't much blender experience. Nif tools, PYFFI and Python: These are the scripts that make blender able to import and export to bethesda games. It looks like a lot but all three are fairly small files. Just follow the install instructions. This link also has a bunch of tutorials at the bottom which should cover everything you need to start making new models. Hope this helps =] It can seem a little overwhelming at first but you've definately chosen a good project to start with, good luck!
sputnik421
I would do something similar to kibblesticks but in 3DS Max, as I don't like Blender and I know my way around 3DS Max. As kibblesticks also says this is a good project to get your feet wet with any of the 3D modelling tools. There is a steep learning curve, I would advise you to go to youtube and watch loads of tuts. For the modelling package you want to try out, to see the UI in action. As if you just open the new modelling package you will find your self bemused within minutes. I am still quite bemused by how modellers manage to cope with Blenders UI, but some love it. Others think 3DS Max is to complex but I started with, G Max so have gotten used to and like the 3DS Max UI. Please be persistent with your modelling ambitions it will get easier as you gain more knowledge. It is quite daunting when you see a blank window, and have to work out how you are going to make the object you want from the primitives Good luck I hope to see your models in game soon.
