Crashing at splash screen

As of yesterday my copy of oblivion has been playing up. Good and proper, not the typical CTD here and there but it has gone really bad. It started off by hanging whilst loading my save game. It got half way and cacked out, if I left it it would crash everytime. And now after many hours of fiddeling about trying to get it working it won't even show the spalsh screen anymore, it just loads, black screen and then right back to desktop.I've tried using a fresh INI file, running the game in compatibilty mode and as admin. I've tried turning off mods, getting rid of mods everything I could think of I tried and has failed. So now I turn to the people of the official forums for help. What information should I post before I do post any. DXDIAG file and load order of mods?

just unchecking mods does not get rid of them. The textures and meshes are still loaded, just no longer referenced by their esp. Also, there are mods that do not have a esp or esm to uncheck and they are still loading too.

Try this to get back to a completely unmodded game for troubleshooting.

Right, giving that ago now.

Unfortuantly that didn't work, got to the part where I made a new Data folder and copied over the stuff. I then loaded it up and it crashed at the splash screen again. And i'm now having to copy all the data back over to the new Data folder as for some reason it won't let me rename the old one back to Data.

If you cannot rename a folder, that is a windows problem.

You should be able to right click on any folder and select rename from the menu.

If you crashed with the vanilla only data folder, then your game file is likely corrupted and you will have to reinstall. - note: the revert to vanilla does not remove the Beth patches as they are integrated into the Oblivion.exe and Oblivion.esm - they cannot be removed short of a full reinstall.

Here is a link to my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure located in the articles section of the Nexus

It allows you to preserve any saves and mods, or remove them completely - your choice.

Have you recently updated drivers? This error is often caused by driver updates.

Try rolling your video drivers back to an earlier version.

Also, Exit Oblivion, then try renaming or deleting the oblivion.ini file (...\My Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Oblivion.ini)

i'm on, well the version it says im on isn't the actual version im on. it says version: 8.801.0.0 which doesn't exist as far as i'm aware for ATI cards. But then it says DDI version: 10.1 which sounds more on the lines of catalyst drivers.should I update or roll back?

Right it's not the drivers, it's a mod. The annoying thing is that the mod that is causing it is changing every time. which is making it very difficult to locate.
