Unable to Select Anything on Main Menu

Hello all,

After a few months of playing Oblivion, I decided to start a new game in Fallout 3. I haven't had it installed in some years, so I popped in my DVD and reinstalled it. There were on problems with the install. Windows 7 UAC didn't give me any troubles, and I patched the game with the official patch from Bethesda's website.

When I start the game and load to the main menu, I have no mouse pointer and when I try to scroll with the keyboard arrow keys, the menu selection jumps around all jerky and always kicks back up to the "New Game". If I try to start a new game, it just flickers around over Yes and No and won't stop.

I am not running ANY mods yet. The ONLY thing installed right now is FO3 Vanilla. I am launching the game from the DVD, so there is no CD patch or anything like that. It is just plain old Vanilla Fallout 3, not the GOTY edition, not the Steam edition, just plain old FO3 from a retail DVD. The problem is occurring before and after patching to 1.7. I checked. I've also tried to uninstall and reinstall to no avail.

I remember back on Windows XP I had a similar problem, but I don't remember how I fixed it. I'm not using a sidebar or anything like that.

Can anyone help me?

Okay, problem solved.

The reason this was happening is because by default the game uses an XBox360 controller as its default input device. I plugged in a controller, and it worked fine. I used the controller to go to settings and set the input device to the keyboard and mouse.

I hope anyone else who has this problem can benefit from my experiences here.
