Question on Modding Etiquette

I was hoping some more experienced modders would give me advice on the etiquette of releasing mods and ports. I've pulled a number of things that I didn't see were ported from FO3 and have been using them for personal play. I've had requests to release some of the items I've shown in my screenshots. I've gathered that usually it's just a matter of crediting the original author of the mesh. I have, however, significantly modified most of the items. I've made some changes to the meshes on a few, and on almost all of them I've torn the nifs apart so you can mix and match the boots and tops etc.

Should I get permission from the original authors in order to release them? If so, I don't suppose anyone knows how to reach backsteppo? The one that's got the most requests so far is an alteration of his black slit dress.

Any advice appreciated.

Assuming you are talking about non-commercial mods which were originally posted on nexus somewhere, I think you must make an honest effort to contact the original authors. Post in the download thread and PM the author, and keep a copy. Many people connect interesting threads to their off-forum email. If there is no reply after a week, look up to see if they are active, or when their last post was. My personal opinion is that if you have made an honest effort and the author doesn't seem to be active anymore, you can go ahead and include it in your mod. Of course I am sure you will give all due credit and point to the original downloads in your readme or other documentation.

It seems that nexusforums has some *very* *strict* definitions about this. I am not a lawyer, I am not associated with the forum moderators, blah blah blah. But that's what I would do, unless the moderators come and say something more specific. This is based on multiple years of experience at other mod forums.

As far as Etiquette goes, I myself would not release something containing anyone elses mod content that I did not have written permission from the author.

I do agree with David up to the point of, if the member is not active, I feel you should ask the staff - If the item is not requested a lot, lets say a pair of headphones from F03 you want to port to NV I would say, its not worth it.

If you were oging to port something a lot of players wanted and COULD NOT contact the authour, id say that the staff would have to decide whats best for the community.

Its really about the rules & your personal opinion.
