Equipment for Solo Mage Nightmare?

So I am considering starting a solo mage nightmare run, having only played in parties thus far.

Stuff:

- I will take the Arcane Warrior specialization exclusively for Shimmering Shield.

- I will go Blood Mage for Blood Wound.

- I have all the DLC and intend of selling the Reaper's Cudgel early on to gain some gold.

- I will be making everything myself (traps, poisons, potions).

- I have a general idea on what powers to take.

My main concern is regards to equipment. I intend to get the Lifegiver, but besides that what is considered "must have" equipment?

What is the best route through the quests?

Any tips and tricks? (No mods and no exploits).

The winter forge- http://www.dragonagenexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=122

so that you can modify your gear there in the game to suit the situation ;)

Yup...I'd use that, too.

However, I think the OP intends to do a vanilla (OP did say "no mods or exploits") solo nightmare run...

Your gear will mean less than your abilities. Not to say you don't need any gear, but just grab the tanky stuff you cross. Your going to want to make yourself a wall. Grab enough willpower to keep your sustained abilities up, and hack away at things. To be honest, settle yourself in - it'll get a little long and boring. The beginning is harder than the middle/end - but, also more fun imo. You actually get to use your mage spells. Even then, it's kinda boring. (IE Tower Ogre ... Winters Grasp, run, run, run, WG, run, run, run)

By the time you have some gear and are going the Arcane way - you'll find yourself ramping up your sustained abilities, and auto hitting everything down. Certainly do-able, but, not exciting at all. Proceed with caution, this route was by far the least fun I had in this awesome game :).
