new video card suggestions

Recommended Posts

I am going to get a new video card to upgrade from my aging 8800GTS with my tax return. My parameters are around, but not much more than $250USD. My 2 top choices right now are...

and

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130549

The 560 has less heat, is a tad smaller and has higher memory speeds and performs at or above the 470 on most games.

The 470 has more streaming processors and is a proven workhorse and performs well at my native resolution which is 1680x1050.

I am not going to pay the extra $100 USD for the 570. Technology changes too fast for that kind of investment. I would much rather save the $100 bucks and use it towards the next gen card. SLI also doesn't make sense to me seeing that both cards above will play any of the games I have and are going to get this year well....namely TES5 and DA2 and ME3 and will go WAY over my budget. I have never been an ATI fan but I do prefer to use AMD processors. The rest of my setup is about as good as it needs to be for my 32bit Vista Ultimate....I might get a copy of WIN 7 but that is not necessary right now, the card is more important...

specs..

AMD Phenom II Black running at the stock 3.4Ghz per core

4GB DDR3 @ 1333

MSI gaming series MB 770-G45

strong 850W PS

nice case with lots of ventilation

SATA HDs....3...1 for VIsta, 1 for XP pro and 1 for storage with no OS on it.

I would like input both on these 2 cards and I guess I will accept ATI/AMD input/recommendations as well even though I probably won't go that way if they meet the price criteria and are comprable. Please don't just say "Get a 580 and SLI!" or other equally ridiculous statements that have no bearing on my decision given my above statements.

Thanks, but I am going with an EVGA product if I go Nvidia due to they have the best warranty in the business and best tech support....meaning English is their first language and the first person I talk to seems to always be able to solve my problem/issue without transferring me 4 times and putting me on hold forever. I guess if I had to go ATI, I would go XFX as they have a very good warranty too.

My 5770 runs pretty good at 1920X1080 You can get 2 of them for around $260AUD now, I've read plenty of really positive reviews about crossfiring 2 of them but never done it myself. My upgrade in the next few weeks will be to a 6970 for $425AUD I know that's a bit out of your price range but if you wait for the 6990 to come out a lot of the prices should drop and you'd be able to save a bit more.

Ok, so my graphics card isn't DX11 capable. :(

Thinking about getting a new one before DA2's release next week.

LIMITATIONS:

1 PCI-E slot. Just one. (It's tight in that case.)

1 Power Lead (400w PS, not going to upgrade that.)

HDMI (although my 21" LCD also has a DVI connector.)

Less than US$150

Question: Is there really enough difference in performance and quality OF THE VISUAL/GAMING experience between DX9 and DX11 that it's worth the switch from my current nVidia GT 240 to the GT 430? The GT 430 has LOWER scores on nVidia's own benchmarks, but it is single slot, single power lead, and DX11 capable! Oh, and under US$100!

Alteratives I'm willing to consider include the GT 440 (maybe) and the ATI Radeon 5770 (I think that's the right model.)

Thoughts?

Long story short, don't upgrade. Wait until you can afford a new build.

Thanks, Urbex! That's the way I'm leaning, but was looking for other opinions or options I had not considered. I had no idea when I got it that the GT 240 was as good as it is, (for something that meets all the limitations in my situation.) Just wish it were DX11-capable...

A lot of the features DX11 adds would be disabled due to the low power of the card, so yeah.
