Modding with Vista?

Hello.

The mods I download don't seem to work with the game, and I'm starting to think that maybe it's the fact that I use Vista that's causing problems?

I'm using Mod Manager and I've run both old and new conflict detectors without any results whatsoever.

I downloaded an alternate beginning (the one where you start on a ship) to the game, to as quick as possible be able to see if the mods work at all - and they don't!

I'm running everything as administrator, so that's not the problem.

Might I have missed something?

Or is it as simple as modding being unable with Vista?

I would really like som help. This is extremly frustrating.

I'm sorry if my english is bad.

Thanks!

Elin

are the mods causing problems to the game, or do they just not work??

for example, if a mod adds something to the game, is it there??

where is your Oblivion installed??

are you loading the game through OBMM??

i have Vista, and i am able to run mods on Oblivion, Fallout 3 and New Vegas, so Vista isn't the problem (at least not in terms of modding)

You've installed it in Program Files? I've run it on Vista without a problem, it actually ran better on Vista than it did on any other (Ignoring 7)

Moral of the story, don't install anything in Program Files, Admin privileges means nothing when Windows is in overprotective-big-brother mode.

Oblivion was written for use with WinXP as that was the latest at that time. When MS came out with Vista (and later Win7) the added a new feature called UAC, UAC prevents changes to any programs installed in the 'program files' folder where Oblivion installs by default. There is no problem when running the vanilla game as there are no changes (beyond patches). However, UAC sees most mods as attempts to change the program and shunts them off into a hidden folder, without bothering to tell you.

The best solution is to reinstall the game outside of the 'program files' folder (and also outside of the Win7 'Program Files (x86)' folder)

Other solutions I have seen can still cause problems - especially when a patch is applied to windows that reactivates and resets any changes you make to UAC preferences. :verymad:

I use C:\Games\Oblivion - and install all games to my \Games folder. UAC will not try to block things there.

If you need help reinstalling - Here is a link to my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure located in the articles section of the Nexus

http://www.tesnexus.com/articles/article.php?id=240

It allows you to preserve any saves and mods, or remove them completely - your choice.
