zionprophecy
So i just bought this game, and i've loaded the overhaul mod and whenever i play i can usually last for a few minutes and it freeezes. Now its not like a normal freeze (well it varies), this one my mouse and keyboard are freezing and things on screen are moving. Heres what i've tried so far: 1. unplugging and plugging them back in.2. turning down video accel. speed thingy under properties (didn't work whatsoever)3. turning off mods. Oh and last question do i have to turn off the Oblivion.esm (master file) when loading another mod?Heres my system specs if you need any more things p[lease tell me how im also not that computer smart so keep that in mind ;) Heres the specs:Hewlett-Packard CompanyAMD athlon 64 Processor3700+2.20 GHz, 2.00 GB of RAM for my graphics card is a Radeon X800 series...also i have a fair amount of processes running in the background onl;y because im not good with comps and im not sure what 90% of them are for. EDIT: well i was looking around and i saw some others with similar problems but let me clarify that when i ctrl, alt delete it does it smoothly it seems to just be oblivion.ALso since i am using a Radeon graphics card im looking to updating the drivers needed to play Oblivion, but all of them seem to be higher then this one like X1000 instead and what not

Guest Tessera
there is sum1 who can help you! The members name is Tessera. She knows a LOT about this! :) ...sniff...sniff Somebody call me..? I'm a "he," by the way... it's just my characters who are female. Why..? Because I love babes, sheesh. Doesn't everybody..? :P Anywho... Oblivion doesn't like RADEON cards and the X800 is a particularly glitchy one to be using on this particular game. Don't get me wrong... it's a fantastic card, on almost EVERY other game EXCEPT Oblivion. You can try the latest Catalyst beta drivers, which were supposedly optimized for Oblivion. They may help. Other things to try: (1) Turn off Vertical Sync completely, both in the game's own video options and in your video driver software. (2) Check to see if Hardware Cursor is enabled for your mouse. If it is, try switching it to Software controlled. If it isn't, then do the opposite and try switching it to Hardware controlled. Sometimes it can lock up one way, sometimes the other way. I blame it on gremlins, personally. (3) If it isn;t already there, then add the line bUse Joystick=0 to the working copy of your Oblivion.ini file ( it's usually located in the same general area as your gamesaves are, under "C:\Documents and Settings\<<your user name>>\My Documents\My Games\Oblivion") (4) If you have ATI's "Catalyst A.I." enabled, then shut it OFF. It has issues. (5) Your video card may be OVERHEATING from this game (many do). Open your computer case, get a table fan (like the kind you cool yourself off with in the summer) and aim the fan into the case. Make sure it's blowing directly on your video card, nice and strong. Now, fire up Oblivion and see if it still locks up after the same amount of time as before. If not, then it's a heat problem... possibly in addition to the other things listed above. If none of those things help you, then please let us know. Good luck.

I don't think that it's your video card. I have a Radeon too and it works fine for me. Is Oblivion the only game that crashes, or does it happen with other games? One thing you might try. When you start up the launch menu, go to options. At the bottom is a space called Video Quality Presets. Click very low, and then try the game. It will look terrible, but if it still crashes we know it probably isn't your video card or video quality settings that is making it crash. If it means anything when i go ctrl alt delete it says its running fine, thats its not NOT responding Well then we're back where we started and it could still be a video driver issue. Not the card -- but the version of the Catalyst driver that you've been using. Older ones do not work with Oblivion. Septim asked a good question: do any other games or applications crash regularly like this, or is it just Oblivion..? Another thing to try: Delete the working copy of your Oblivion.ini file and then re-start the game. DO NOT DELETE THE COPY THATS IN YOUR MAIN OBLIVION FOLDER. You want to delete the working copy... the one that's usually located at: C:\Documents and Settings\ <<your user name>>\My Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Oblivion.ini When you uninstalled the game, it would have left that copy of the file alone. If the file has bad settings within it, then re-installing wouldn't have made any difference -- because it's still loading the same bad configuration file as before. Deleting it will force the game to write a brand-new one. I'm tossing out suggestions. Process of elimination and all that.

Simply rename the file, from Oblivion.ini to Oblivion.bak... which for all intents and purposes will make it invisible to the game, but you'll still be able to keep it... just in case. You've also mentioned that you had a couple of other games that wouldn't load properly. If so, then this may have nothing to do with Oblivion. It could be almost anything... up to and including failing hardware in your system that is behaving intermittently.
