Item stacking in inventory lists

Does anyone here know how to stop the item stacking that happens to some of the weapons and armour in the game. For example, you have more than one police baton in inventory but only see one listed, when you could have five or more stacked on top of each other. You can't repair them items in question because the game sees it as one item only. It's quite annoying when trying to keep track of your weight and how much crap you're carrying around.
