FNV freezing randomly

First time it freezes when "Loading" after starting a New game, it freezes for about 5 minutes and then continue to work normally until it freezes again for 5 minutes and it continues to do that all the time... i7 860, 8GB and Ati 5970 should be enough because Dead Space 2 and many other work like a charm...

I tried updating DirectX, ATI drivers, even that trick with d3d9.dll putting in the game folder... it just doesn't make any sense...

So it doesn't CTD anytime but just freezes and unfreezes after some time, then I can play normally for few minutes...

The game is CLEAN without any mods, only updated to 1.2.0.314 (in hope it will solve the problem) ... and as I see 1.2.0.352 doesn't solve anything, only adds addon manager so I guess it is not worth installing...

Anyone come across that problem before?

Thank you!

Yes! Not sure but I believe it is a rendering issue in game, mods don't seem to matter , help but not fix, save game often. I started game having terrible issues, a lesser man would have trashed it! I have done a number of tweeks that have vastly improved my experience in game. d3d9.dll - 34778, NVSR(stutter remover) - 34832, Better game performance for older pcs - 40128, play windowed not full screen(was able to set resolution higher and exit game without crashing), BACK-UP .ini files ( I changed all three to cover every base ) set iAudioCacheSize=8192, iMaxSizeForCachedSound=128 (or 256) then SAVE. I am also going to try changing bUseThreadedAI=0 (to = 1) and adding underneath iNumHWThreads=2. I understand some of the patches change .ini files like removing Archive invalidation so check that as well.

I would like to thank Bethesda, even glitchy....Pretty Awsome Game. And to all the modders, life just would not be the same without you, I bow to your braininess and to the Nexus as an outlet for your great work.

Thank you, but as I said it does not crash, it just freezes and then un-freezes. So Saving game is not really necessary as I can continue to play after it un-freezes... but why all the freezing stuff, that is the question !

The Fallout INI is honorably optimized so you WILL need to tweak it to your system. This may fix numerous problems.

First let me start by saying Gamebro (SP) engine is outdated and very buggy. It is a dual core engine (it might work with 4 cores but I stress MIGHT), new Vegas to me feels like an expansion of Fallout 3 with a few updates.

INI optimizing as followed

This is a bit if an iffy subject but the answers are quite easy to do. NOTE it requires much testing as it can cause instability with a rig. (DISCLAIMER: I am no expert or professional I am going by personal experience)

use this to find the first of three files you will need to copy, backup and edit.

Step 1 - "Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout new Vegas" Locate the file "Fallout_default"

Step 2 - Copy, backup and archive the file now it is time to edit it.

Step 3 - use the find attachment (Ctrl+F) to locate "bUseThreadedAI=0" and change it to "bUseThreadedAI=1"

Step 4 - use the find attachment (Ctrl+F) to locate "iNumHavokThreads=1" and change it to "iNumHavokThreads=4" (Or 2 if it makes the game unstable, Gamebyo (SP) is a dual core engine modified to (TRY to) work with Quad cores)

Step 5 - use the find attachment (Ctrl+F) to locate "iPreloadSizeLimit=26214400" and change it to one of the following for the specified RAM you wish to allocate: 1GB = "iPreloadSizeLimit=52428800." 2GB = "iPreloadSizeLimit=104857600." DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT exceed 3gb as the engine is an x32 bit engine. Default RAM allocated is 512 MB. I recommend you allocate 1GB or 2GB as it seems to be more stable than other amounts.

Step 6 - Repeat Step 2 through Step 5 with the "Fallout" and "FalloutPrefs" files located in "(user name)\Documents\My Games\FalloutNV" folder (May not be necessary as "Fallout_Default" is said to update the two mentioned here. Better safe than sorry with Gamebyo (SP).)

NOTE if you "confirm integrity of local content" you will have to update these files again.
